It was named by the local Dharawal people and became the inspiration for the suburb's name, by government surveyor W.A.B. Geaves in 1855. The Gymea Lily has been adopted as a symbol of the area and features on the crest of many local organisations. Development in the area has eradicated most of the lilies but many can still be found, a few kilometres south, in the Royal National Park. The Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line (numbered T4, coloured azure blue) is a commuter railway line in the eastern and southern suburbs of Sydney and is a part of the Sydney Trains network. The line was constructed in the 1880s to Wollongong to take advantage of agricultural and mining potentials in the Illawarra area. Gymea railway station is located on the Cronulla line, serving the Sydney suburb of Gymea. It is served by Sydney Trains T4 line services. History Gymea station opened on 16 December 1939 when the Cronulla line opened from Sutherland to Cronulla. The station was upgraded in 2005 and given a lift and canopies over the stairs. Originally, Gymea was one of two crossing loops on the line, with the other being at Caringbah. ''Doryanthes excelsa'', commonly known as the gymea lily, is a flowering plant in the family Doryanthaceae that is endemic to coastal areas of New South Wales near Sydney. It has sword-like leaves more than long and it grows a flower spike up to high. The apex of the spike bears a large cluster of bright red flowers, each across. Its common name is derived from the name given to the plant by the indigenous harawalpeople. The Sydney suburbs of Gymea and Gymea Bay are named after the lily. Description Gymea lilies have a rosette of large numbers of sword-shaped, strap like leaves long and wide. The leaves are bright green, fibrous and glabrous.
