Gwyn Morgan (writer)
Gwyn Morgan (born 28 May 1954) is a Welsh-language author. Background and career Born and raised in Trecynon near Aberdare, as the only son of Gilbert and Margaret Morgan. He was educated at Ysgol Gymraeg Ynyslwyd, Aberdâr, Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen, Pontypridd; and Trinity College, Carmarthen. He has been a teacher in Ysgol Gymraeg Gilfach Fargoed and in Ysgol Gymraeg Ynyslwyd, Aberdar. He currently works as an advisory teacher with a company in Trefforest. He is married to Joyce [Morgan] who was head of the Welsh department at Blaengwawr Comprehensive School. His stepson is the Welsh Nationalist academic, Dafydd Trystan Davies. He published his first poem in Y Faner in 1976. He lives near the small village of Penderyn, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Penderyn. Trecynon
Trecynon is a village near Aberdare situated in the Cynon Valley, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. It dates from the early nineteenth century and developed as a result of the opening of the Aberdare Ironworks at Llwydcoed in 1800. Etymology The settlement was originally known as ''Heol-y-Felin'' (translated as Mill Street) due to its location on the road to Llwydcoed Mill. This name was still in use in 1855 when Heolyfelin Chapel was established. The name Trecynon was adopted around 1860 after a competition was held at a local eisteddfod competition to decide upon a name for the village. History Until 1800 there was only one house at Heolyfelin, next to Hen-Dy-Cwrdd Unitarian Chapel, built in 1751. When the iron industry attracted migrants to the Aberdare District there was an increased demand for housing and, as a result, Heolyfelin began to grow. Aberdare
Aberdare ( ; cy, Aberdâr) is a town in the Cynon Valley area of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, at the confluence of the Rivers Dare (Dâr) and Cynon. Aberdare has a population of 39,550 (mid-2017 estimate). Aberdare is south-west of Merthyr Tydfil, north-west of Cardiff and east-north-east of Swansea. During the 19th century it became a thriving industrial settlement, which was also notable for the vitality of its cultural life and as an important publishing centre. Etymology The name ''Aberdare'' means "mouth/confluence of the river dare", as the town is located where the Dare river ( cy, Afon Dâr) meets the Cynon ( cy, afon Cynon). While the town's Welsh spelling uses formal conventions, the English spelling of the name reflects the town's pronunciation in the local Gwenhwyseg dialect of South East Wales. Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen
Ysgol Garth Olwg (previously named Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen and Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg), English Garth Olwg School is a Welsh-medium comprehensive school in the village of Church Village near Pontypridd, in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. It was the first Welsh language comprehensive school in the south of Wales. Attention was brought upon the school in 2009 with the revival of a campaign to retain the name of ''Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen'', for reasons of historical significance, in protest over the local council's decision to rename the school ''Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg''. Trinity College, Carmarthen
Trinity University College ( cy, Coleg Prifysgol y Drindod) was a Church University College in Carmarthen, Wales. The institution was founded in 1848 as the South Wales and Monmouthshire Training College, a teacher-training college. It changed its name in 1931 to Trinity College, Carmarthen; and in 2009 to Trinity University College. In 2010, it merged with the University of Wales, Lampeter to become the new University of Wales Trinity Saint David, with the Trinity site becoming the UWTSD Carmarthen Campus. History Trinity University College began life in 1848 as the South Wales and Monmouthshire Training College, making it the oldest teacher training college in continuous operation in Wales. Trefforest
Treforest ( cy, Trefforest) is a village in the south-east of Pontypridd, in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. It is situated in the Treforest electoral ward, along with the village of Glyntaff (or Glyn-Taf). It is part of the Pontypridd Town community. Treforest runs along the west bank of the River Taff ( cy, Afon Taf), while Glyntaff runs along its east bank. Treforest extends from immediately south-east of Ynysangharad Park, where the A4058 link from the A470 joins the A473 Broadway (south of the adjoining wards of Graig and Trallwn), all the way to join the Tonteg ward in the south (part of the community of Llantwit Fardre). Penderyn, Rhondda Cynon Taf
Penderyn is a rural village in the Cynon Valley, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, located near Hirwaun. Location The village lies on the A4059 road between Hirwaun and Brecon and is the last settlement on that road in the county of Rhondda Cynon Taf before the border with Powys to the north. The village sits just within the southern boundary of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The River Cynon passes through the area. There are four disused churches and chapels in Penderyn: Jerusalem Chapel (Calvinistic Methodist, now a house), Siloam Chapel (Baptist, a grade II listed building), Soar Chapel (Independent, now an antiques shop) and St Cynog's Church (Church in Wales). Penderyn is the home of Penderyn Whisky, whose distillery is located opposite the local school. Welsh ( or ) is a Celtic language of the Brittonic subgroup that is native to the Welsh people.
