Gwen Westerman
Gwen Westerman (also known as Gwen Nell Westerman) is a Dakota educator, writer and artist. She is the Director of the Native American Literature Symposium. She was appointed by Governor Tim Walz as Minnesota's third Poet Laureate in September 2021. Life and career Westerman is an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and speaker of the Dakota language. Through her mother, she is also Cherokee and grew up in Kansas. She is Professor of English and Director of the Humanities Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Education Westerman received a BA and MA in English from Oklahoma State University. Dakota People
The Dakota (pronounced , Dakota language: ''Dakȟóta/Dakhóta'') are a Native American tribe and First Nations band government in North America. They compose two of the three main subcultures of the Sioux people, and are typically divided into the Eastern Dakota and the Western Dakota. The four bands of Eastern Dakota are the Bdewákaŋthuŋwaŋ, Waȟpéthuŋwaŋ, Waȟpékhute, and Sisíthuŋwaŋ and are sometimes referred to as the Santee (''Isáŋyathi'' or ''Isáŋ-athi''; "knife" + "encampment", "dwells at the place of knife flint"), who reside in the eastern Dakotas, central Minnesota and northern Iowa. They have federally recognized tribes established in several places. The National Museum of Natural History is a natural history museum administered by the Smithsonian Institution, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., United States. All My Relations Arts
All My Relations Arts is a Native American arts organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a project of the Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI). History The organization was founded in 1999 by Shirlee Stone. It was initially a project of the American Indian Business Development Corporation and hosted over 23 exhibitions at Ancient Traders Gallery until 2009. All My Relations has also been exhibited at The Edge Center in Bigfork, Minnesota, Cornucopia Gallery in Lanesboro, Minnesota, and Mill City Museum in Minneapolis. Following the closure of Ancient Traders Gallery, All My Relations relocated to a space at 1414 East Franklin Avenue. Artists who have exhibited with the arts organization include Mona Smith, Jim Denomie, Andrea Carlson, Carl Gawboy, Gordon Coons, and Sam English. Minnesota Historical Society
The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) is a nonprofit educational and cultural institution dedicated to preserving the history of the U.S. state of Minnesota. It was founded by the territorial legislature in 1849, almost a decade before statehood. The Society is named in the Minnesota Constitution. It is headquartered in the Minnesota History Center in downtown Saint Paul. Although its focus is on Minnesota history it is not constrained by it. Its work on the North American fur trade has been recognized in Canada as well.
