Guy Williams (politician)
Guy R. Williams (October 7, 1907 – December 31, 1992) was a Canadian Senator and Haisla First Nations leader and was, for a number of years, the only Native Canadian in the Senate. He was appointed on December 9, 1971, following the March 31, 1971 retirement of James Gladstone who had been called the first status Indian appointed to the upper house. In fact Williams appears to be the very first First Nations Senator, because Senator Gladstone was only adopted onto the Blood reserve and he was ineligible to be on the Indian Register. Williams was born on a Native reserve of Kitamaat Village Kitamaat Village, formerly Kitimat Mission, is the principal community of the Haisla people and their government, the Haisla Nation. The Senate of Canada (french: region=CA, Sénat du Canada) is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister. The explicit basis on which appointment is made and the chamber's size is set, at 105 members, is by province or territory assigned to 'divisions'. The Constitution divides provinces of Canada geographically among four regions, which are represented equally. Senatorial appointments were originally for life; since 1965, they have been subject to a mandatory retirement age of 75. In Canada, an Indian reserve (french: réserve indienne) is specified by the '' Indian Act'' as a "tract of land, the legal title to which is vested in Her Majesty, that has been set apart by Her Majesty for the use and benefit of a band." Indian reserves are the areas set aside for First Nations, an indigenous Canadian group, after a contract with the Canadian state ("the Crown"), and are not to be confused with land claims areas, which involve all of that First Nations' traditional lands: a much larger territory than any reserve. Native Brotherhood Of British Columbia
The Native Brotherhood of British Columbia is a province-wide First Nations rights organization. It was founded on the 13 December, 1931, during a week long series of meetings between Haida representatives from Masset and Tsimshian representatives in the Tsimshian community of Port Simpson (a.k.a. Lax Kw'alaams). Masset Haida chief Alfred Adams, Tsimshian ethnologist and chief William Beynon and Chief William Jeffrey were among its four founding members. It was modelled in spirit and structure on the Alaska Native Brotherhood. Since its absorption of the Pacific Coast Native Fishermen's Organization and its primarily Kwakwaka'wakw membership in 1942, it became oriented more towards fishing rights. Kitamaat Village
Kitamaat Village, formerly Kitimat Mission, is the principal community of the Haisla people and their government, the Haisla Nation. Located on the ''Kitamaat 2'' First Nations Reserve (formerly Kitimat 2) on the east side of Kitimat Arm just south of the town of Kitimat, British Columbia. The location is also that of the ''Haisla'' Post Office. The "Kitamaat" part of the name comes from the Tsimshian people, who originate from the Prince Rupert and Metlakatla areas. "Kitamaat" means "people of the snow" in Tsimshian, but the Haisla name for Kitamaat Village is "Tsee-Motsa", meaning "Snag Beach".
