Guy Matheson
Guy Kevin Vincent Matheson (born 20 September 1952) was an Australian politician and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1988 until 1991. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Matheson obtained a certificate in commercial accountancy at Penrith TAFE and worked in the Penrith branch of the National Australia Bank. He joined the Liberal party at age 18. Prior to the 1988 election, Matheson won Liberal pre-selection for the seat of Penrith. The seat was considered unwinnable for the Liberal party and Matheson's campaign was low key and based on the slogan "Who is this Guy?". However the election was a landslide victory for the Liberal party and Matheson defeated the previous member Peter Anderson with a two party preferred swing of greater than 10%. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. 1988 New South Wales State Election
Elections to the 49th Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday 19 March 1988. All seats in the Legislative Assembly and a third of the seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The Labor government of Premier Barrie Unsworth was defeated by the Liberal-National Coalition, led by Opposition Leader Nick Greiner. The election took place following a redistribution of seats, which resulted in the Assembly growing from 99 to 109 seats. Peter Thomas Anderson (born 23 November 1947), a former Australian politician, was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Nepean between 1978 and 1981, Penrith between 1981 and 1988, and Liverpool between 1989 and 1995 for the Labor Party. During his parliamentary career, Anderson held a range of portfolios including Minister for Health, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Minister for Youth and Community Services, Minister for Local Government, Minister for Corrective Services, Minister for Police and Emergency Services between 1981 and 1988. In Australian politics, the two-party-preferred vote (TPP or 2PP) is the result of an election or opinion poll after preferences have been distributed to the highest two candidates, who in some cases can be independents. For the purposes of TPP, the Liberal/National Coalition is usually considered a single party, with Labor being the other major party. Typically the TPP is expressed as the percentages of votes attracted by each of the two major parties, e.g. "Coalition 50%, Labor 50%", where the values include both primary votes and preferences. The TPP is an indicator of how much swing has been attained/is required to change the result, taking into consideration preferences, which may have a significant effect on the result.
