Alan Harvey Guth (; born February 27, 1947) is an American theoretical physicist and cosmologist. Guth has researched elementary particle theory (and how particle theory is applicable to the early universe). He is Victor Weisskopf Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. William Westley Guth (October 15, 1871 – April 19, 1929) was an American attorney, Methodist minister, and academic who served as the fourth president of Goucher College. Early life, family, and education Guth was born on October 15, 1871, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Rev. George Guth and Susan Sophie Grandlienard of Perrefitte, Switzerland. Guth was of German, French, and Swiss descent. When he was a teenager, his family moved to San Francisco, California. He enrolled at the University of the Pacific and continued his studies at the then-newly established Stanford University, from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1892. Raymond John Guth (May 29, 1924 – December 17, 2021) was an American film, stage and television actor. Early years Guth was born on May 29, 1924, in Oil City, Pennsylvania. He studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse while supporting himself Work nights at a morgue. Career Guth originally performed in stage plays. Lawrence David Guth (born 1977) is a professor of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Education and career Guth graduated from Yale in 2000, with BS in mathematics. In 2005, he got his PhD in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied geometry of objects with random shapes under the supervision of Tomasz Mrowka. Alfred Guth (27 July 1908 – 13 November 1996) was an Austrian-born American water polo player, swimmer, and modern pentathlete. At the 1932 Maccabiah Games in Mandatory Palestine, in swimming he won a gold medal and two silver medals. He competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics, coming in 33rd in modern pentathlon. After emigrating to the United States, he competed in Masters swimming and established 41 U.S. Masters Swimming age-group records. Eugene Guth (August 21, 1905 – July 5, 1990) was a Hungarian American physicist who made contributions to polymer physics and to nuclear and solid state physics. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics by the University of Vienna in 1928.
