Known for his Taxonomy (biology), taxonomic research, Otth described ''Pucciniastrum'', a genus of rust fungi within the family Pucciniastraceae. He was the binomial authority, binomial author of a number of species within the genus ''Peronospora''. The fungi genus ''Otthia'' (Theodor Rudolph Joseph Nitschke, Nitschke ex Karl Wilhelm Gottlieb Leopold Fuckel, Fuckel) was named in his honour in 1870.

Peronospora
''Peronospora'' is a genus of oomycetes that are obligate plant pathogens of many eudicots. Most species in this group produce a downy mildew disease, which can cause severe damage to many different cultivated crops, as well as wild and ornamental plants. There are 19 genera that produce downy mildew, and ''Peronospora'' has been placed alongside '' Pseudoperonospora'' in the group of downy mildews with coloured conidia. ''Peronospora'' has far more species than any other genus of the downy mildews. However, many species have been moved from this genus to be reclassified to other or new genera. Eduard Fischer (mycologist)
Eduard Fischer (16 June 1861 – 18 November 1939) was a Swiss botanist and mycologist. Life Fischer was the son of botanist Ludwig Fischer, a professor and director of the state botanic garden. Fischer studied at the University of Bern and graduated in 1883 with mushroom researcher Heinrich Anton de Bary in Strasbourg, with whom he studied Gasteromycetes. During further studies in Berlin during 1884–1885, he worked with Simon Schwendener (1829–1919), August Wilhelm Eichler (1839–1887) and Paul Friedrich August Ascherson (1834–1913). In 1885 Fischer was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Bern; 1893, he was promoted to associate professor. From 1897 to 1933 he was professor of botany and general biology at the university, and succeeded his father as director of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Institute in Bern. Theodor Rudolph Joseph Nitschke (26 July 1834, Breslau – 12 December 1883, Münster) was a German botanist and mycologist. He received his education in Breslau, obtaining his PhD in 1858. Rusts are plant diseases caused by pathogenic fungi of the order Pucciniales (previously known as Uredinales). An estimated 168 rust genera and approximately 7,000 species, more than half of which belong to the genus ''Puccinia'', are currently accepted.
