Gustaf Weidel
Nils Gustaf Weidel, né Johnsson (7 March 1890 – 11 December 1959) was a Swedish diplomat and gymnast who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Early life Gustaf Weidel was born as Gustaf Johnsson in Malmö, Sweden as the son of a local police chief inspector. As a youngster Weidel was a gymnast and was part of the Swedish team at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, which was able to win the gold medal in the gymnastics men's team event. He was enrolled as a student at Lund University in 1909, becoming a Bachelor of Arts in 1910 and a Candidate of Law in 1914. It was during his time at the university that he changed his last name to Weidel. Career In 1921 Weidel became employed by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs as an acting vice consul. He was commercial attaché and commercial counsellor in Washington, D.C., from 1922 to 1933. Malmö (, ; da, Malmø ) is the largest city in the Swedish county (län) of Scania (Skåne). The Military Order of Christ is the former order of Knights Templar as it was reconstituted in Portugal. Before 1910 it was known as the Royal Military Order of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Order of the Knights of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Emperor Pedro I of Brazil founded the National Order of the Southern Cross ( pt, Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul) as a Brazilian order of chivalry on 1 December 1822. The order aimed to commemorate the independence of Brazil (7 September 1822) and the coronation of Pedro I (1 December 1822). The name derives from the geographical position of the country, under the constellation of the Southern Cross and also in memory of the name – ''Terra de Santa Cruz'' (Land of the Holy Cross) – given to Brazil following its first invasion by Europeans in 1500.
