Guntars Mankus
Guntars Mankus (born 5 July 1969) is a Latvian orienteer, rogainer and adventure racer. At the 5th World Rogaining Championships in Lesná, Czech Republic in 2002 he won a gold medal and the title of the World Rogaining Champion in Mixed Open category in team with Anita Liepina and Raimonds Lapiņš. At 6th World Rogaining Championships in Arizona, United States in 2004 the same team won a bronze medal in Mixed Open category. At 7th World Rogaining Championships in Warrumbungles, Australia they regained the title of the World Rogaining Champion in Mixed Open category. At 13th World Rogaining Championships in Kiilopää, Finland he won a silver medal in Mixed Open category in team with Irita Puķīte. Rogaining
Rogaining is an orienteering sport of long distance cross-country navigation, involving both route planning and navigation between checkpoints using a variety of map types. In a rogaine, teams of two to five people choose which checkpoints to visit within a time limit with the intent of maximising their score. Teamwork, endurance, competition and an appreciation for the natural environment are features of the sport. Championship rogaines are 24 hours long, but rogaines can be as short as two hours. History Rogaining can trace its roots back to 1947 when the first of many events with some of the features of rogaines was organised by the Melbourne University Mountaineering Club. The events from the 1940s eventually led to the birth of the sport of rogaining in April 1976, in Melbourne, Australia. Precision Orienteering
Trail orienteering (TrailO) is an orienteering sport that involves precise reading of an orienteering map and the corresponding terrain. Trail orienteers must identify, in the terrain and in the presence of decoys, control points shown on the map. TrailO involves navigation skills but unlike most other forms of orienteering, it involves no point to point racing and little or no route choice. It is conducted usually on trails and because the objective is accuracy, not the speed of physical movement, the sport is accessible to physically disabled competitors on equal terms as able-bodied. International Rogaining Federation
International Rogaining Federation (IRF) is the peak international body for the sport of rogaining. The aims of the IRF are to promote rogaining worldwide, maintain the culture and the rules of the sport. The IRF has adopted the Rules of Rogaining, which set the basic rules of the sport, govern the conduct of competitors and set minimum technical standards for championship rogaines. The IRF sanctions World Rogaining Championships, which are held annually as from 2012 (previously have been held once in two years). The IRF issues Geoduck awards to rogaining administrators and event organisers for long-term contributions to international rogaining.
