History The name ''Gunnawarra'' comes from the pastoral property established by Walter Jervoise Scott and his brother Arthur Jervoise Scott, and is derived from Aboriginal words ''gunnaya'' meaning ''camp'' and ''warra'' meaning ''small''. Cairns (, ) is a city in Queensland, Australia, on the tropical north east coast of Far North Queensland. The population in June 2019 was 153,952, having grown on average 1.02% annually over the preceding five years. The city is the 5th-most-populous in Queensland, and 15th in Australia. Gunnawarra Homestead
Gunnawarra Homestead is a heritage-listed homestead at Gunnawarra Road, Gunnawarra, Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1878 to 1908. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Gunnawarra is a pastoral property first occupied by Europeans in 1865 and was an outlying part of the Valley of Lagoons run on the Upper Burdekin River, established in 1863. Ludwig Leichhardt discovered and named the Valley of Lagoons in 1845. George Dalrymple was appointed the first Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Kennedy district in 1861. He had arrived in Australia in the late 1850s, hoping to take up land on the Darling Downs. However, this proved unsuccessful and he travelled north. The Herbert River is a river located in Far North Queensland, Australia. The southernmost of Queensland's wet tropics river systems, it was named in 1864 by George Elphinstone Dalrymple explorer, after Robert George Wyndham Herbert, the first Premier of Queensland. Walter Jervoise Scott
Walter Jervoise Scott (1835—1890) was a grazier in Queensland, Australia. He was a pioneer in the Valley of Lagoons. Early life Walter Jervoise Scott was born on 3 April 1835, the son of James Winter Scott and his wife Lucy (née Jervoise). Scott was raised and educated in the UK and arrived in Australia in 1863 following stints as private secretary to a governor of Mauritius. Valley of Lagoons The Valley of Lagoons Station was established in 1862 after the area was opened up by the government. A partnership formed between Walter Jervoise Scott, his brother Arthur, George Elphinstone Dalrymple and Robert Herbert (then Premier of Queensland) financed the acquisition of the leasehold. Kennedy Highway
The Kennedy Highway is a highway in northern Queensland, Australia. It runs as National Route 1 for approximately 243 km from Smithfield, on the northern outskirts of Cairns, to the Gulf Developmental Road in the vicinity of Forty Mile Scrub and Undara Volcanic national parks (at Minnamoolka, about 40 kilometres south of Mount Garnet). South of this junction, the road continues as the Kennedy Developmental Road (State Highway 62) to Boulia about 936 kilometres away, via Hughenden. West of the junction, National Route 1 continues as the Gulf Developmental Road to Normanton. The Gillies Highway is a road that runs from Gordonvale in the Cairns Region through the Gillies Range (part of the Great Dividing Range) to Atherton in the Tablelands Region, both in Queensland, Australia. Bruce Highway
The Bruce Highway is a major highway in Queensland, Australia. Commencing in the state capital, Brisbane, it passes through areas close to the eastern coast on its way to Cairns in Far North Queensland.
