Gunnar Ring Amundsen
Gunnar Ring Amundsen (12 July 1894 – 11 December 1972) was a Norwegian engineer and businessperson. He was born in Vestre Aker as a son of Axel Amundsen (1856–1939) and Caroline Cathrine Marie Ring (1869–1949). He underwent schooling at Thunes Mekaniske Verksted from 1913 to 1915, then later in Ilmenau, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in Brazil from 1921 to 1922. In 1922 he married Alice Eisenbach, the eldest daughter of Brazilian factory owner Yorge Eisenbach. In 1922 he was hired at Vulkan Jernstøberi og Mekaniske Verksted. He worked as the chief executive officer of the company from 1939 to 1964. He was also a delegate to the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 1946. He chaired the employers' association ''Mekaniske verksteders landsforening'' from 1947 to 1951, having been a board member since 1930, and chaired ''Støperienes landsforening'' from 1929 to 1938 and 1946 to 1948. Vestre Aker
Vestre Aker (Western Aker) is a borough of the city of Oslo, Norway. It has a population of 50,157 as of 2020. The previous Aker Municipality was merged into the city of Oslo in 1948. The borough of Vestre Aker was organized as part of the 1 January 2004 reform. Previous boroughs Vinderen and Røa became part of the new borough of Vestre Aker. The borough of Vestre Aker does not correspond to Vestre Aker parish of the Church of Norway, that lies east of the borough. The borough of Vestre Aker belongs to Ris, Røa and Voksen parishes of the Church of Norway. Situated in the hillside west of the city centre, Vestre Aker is known for being one of the wealthiest parts of Oslo. Elektrisk Bureau or EB was a Norwegian manufacturer of telecommunication equipment. It was founded in 1882 and lasted until 1993 when it became part of Asea Brown Boveri (ABB). The company was located at Billingstad in Asker. History In 1882 Carl Söderberg founded EB. The background was that Söderberg, who had started a telephone union in Christiania, felt that Bell System had been charging too high prices. In 1885 the company was made limited and a year later Akers Mekaniske Verksted became the largest owner. EB became the largest domestic producer of telephone systems as well as export. But during the 1920s when the automatic centrals were introduced, EB lost its leading position. Instead focus was moved to the consumer market, and in 1928 L. M. Ericsson became the main owner of EB, granting a great deal of patents that EB could utilize. The Cemetery of Our Saviour ( no, Vår Frelsers gravlund) is a cemetery in Oslo, Norway, located north of Hammersborg in Gamle Aker district. It is located adjacent to the older Old Aker Cemetery and was created in 1808 as a result of the great famine and cholera epidemic of the Napoleonic Wars. Its grounds were extended in 1911. The cemetery has been full and thus closed for new graves since 1952, with interment only being allowed in existing family graves. The cemetery includes five sections, including ''Æreslunden'', Norway's main honorary burial ground, and the western, southern, eastern and northern sections. The Cemetery of Our Saviour became the preferred cemetery of bourgeois and other upper-class families. It has many grand tombstones and is the most famous cemetery in Norway. Emperor Pedro I of Brazil founded the National Order of the Southern Cross ( pt, Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul) as a Brazilian order of chivalry on 1 December 1822.
