Gunnar Larsen (politician)
Gunnar Larsen (1902–1973) was a Danish chemical engineer, businessman and politician. He served as the minister for transport between 1940 and 1943. He left Denmark in 1954 and exiled into Ireland where he lived until his death. Biography Larsen was born on 10 January 1902. He was an engineer by profession and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology obtaining a degree in chemical engineering in 1926. He was named as the director of FL Smidth & Co. in 1935 becoming a prominent figure in the Danish industry. Larsen replaced his father as the director of the company. Larsen was one of the confidantes of Danish politician Erik Scavenius. He resigned from the company on 8 July 1940 when he was appointed minister of transport. He was part of the coalition government and the first Buhl cabinet which ceased to function on 29 August 1943. He served in the cabinets as an independent politician. The Ministry is headed by a Permanent Secretary. The Ministry of Transport employs approximately 140 staff. ''Den Store Danske Encyklopædi'' (''The Great Danish Encyclopedia'') is the most comprehensive contemporary Danish language encyclopedia. The 20 volumes of the encyclopedia were published successively between 1994 and 2001; a one-volume supplement was published in 2002 and two index volumes in 2003. The work comprises 115,000 articles, ranging in size from single-line cross references to the 130-page entry on Denmark. The articles were written by a staff of about 4,000 academic experts led by editor-in-chief Jørn Lund. Articles longer than a few dozen lines are signed by their authors. Many articles are illustrated. Vilhelm Buhl
Vilhelm Buhl (16 October 1881 – 18 December 1954) was Prime Minister of Denmark from 4 May 1942 to 9 November 1942 as head of the ''Unity Government'' (the Cabinet of Vilhelm Buhl I) during the German occupation of Denmark of World War II, until the Nazis ordered him removed. He was Prime Minister again from 5 May 1945 to 7 November 1945 as head of a unity government (the ''Cabinet of Vilhelm Buhl II'') after the liberation of Denmark by the British Field Marshal Montgomery. Vilhelm Buhl was a member of the Social Democrats. He joined the party while a law student at the University of Copenhagen. Buhl held the post of Finance Minister in the cabinets of Thorvald Stauning from 20 July 1937 to 4 May 1942. During Nazi Germany's occupation of Denmark, Thorvald Stauning had created a ''unity government''. When Thorvald Stauning died in May 1942, Vilhelm Buhl succeeded him.
