Gunnar Hallström
Hans Gunnar Fredrik Hallstr̦m (5 January 1910 Р29 June 1989) was a Swedish trade unionist and politician. Hallstr̦m joined the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League in 1927, remaining active in it until 1936. He then became leader of the Malm̦ branch of the Swedish Municipal Workers' Union (Kommunal), and was elected to the city council. In 1948, he was elected as president of Kommunal, serving until 1973, also serving on the committee of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation. In 1964, he was also elected as president of the Public Services International Public Services International (PSI) is the global union federation for workers in public services, including those who work in social services, health care, municipal services, central government and public utilities. , PSI has 700 affiliated .... Malmö (, ; da, Malmø ) is the largest city in the Swedish county (län) of Scania (Skåne). Swedish Municipal Workers' Union
The Swedish Municipal Workers' Union ( sv, Svenska Kommunalarbetareförbundet), is the largest trade union in Sweden with 570 000 members as of 2005, it was created 1910. It is commonly referred to as ''Kommunal'' ("''Municipal''"). The union was founded in Stockholm on 23 January 1910, as a split from the Swedish Factory Workers' Union. Like its predecessor, it affiliated to the Swedish Trade Union Confederation. It initially had 1,218 members, but grew rapidly. The Swedish Tramwaymen's Union left in 1917, but rejoined the following year. The Swedish Firefighters' Union joined in 1918, then the Swedish Hospital Staff Union split away in 1923, rejoining in 1945. By this point, the union had 59,426 members. The Swedish Vergers' Union joined in 1946, then the State Hospital Personnel Union in 1967, the Swedish Chimney Sweeps' Union in 1981, and the Swedish Agricultural Workers' Union in 2001. The Swedish Trade Union Confederation ( sv, Landsorganisationen i Sverige ; literally "National Organisation in Sweden"), commonly referred to as LO (), is a national trade union centre, an umbrella organisation for fourteen Swedish trade unions that organise mainly "blue-collar" workers. The Confederation, which gathers in total about 1.5 million employees out of Sweden's 10 million people population, was founded in 1898 by blue-collar unions on the initiative of the 1897 Scandinavian Labour Congress and the Swedish Social Democratic Party, which almost exclusively was made up by trade unions. Adolph Kummernuss
Adolph Kummernuss (23 June 1895 – 7 August 1979) was a German trade union leader. Born in Hamburg, Kummernuss found work in the city's port, and joined the youth wing of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), then in 1912 became a full party member. That year, he also joined the German Transport Workers' Union. In 1915, he was conscripted into the army, serving on the Eastern Front and then after a serious injury, on the Western Front, before being invalided out in 1918. After the war, Kummernuss took a variety of jobs, and gradually rose to prominence in his union and in the SPD. He strongly opposed the Nazis, and when they forceably dissolved the unions, in 1933, he continued to organise illegal union meetings, working closely with the International Transport Workers' Federation. He was arrested in 1935, and spent several months in the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp, before being sentenced to two years in prison. He was released in 1937, and found work in a war ...
