Gumbo (song)
"Gumbo" is a song by the American band Phish. It is a funk/ jazz song written around 1990 by Phish guitarist and lead vocalist Trey Anastasio and drummer Jon Fishman. It is the third track from their 1995 live album ''A Live One'' and was released as their ninth promotional single by Elektra Records in 1995. Like "Split Open and Melt," "Gumbo" started out as a strong tune but one that had a destiny that didn’t lie solely in its composition. A mix of acid jazz and loose funk attended with three-part harmonies and silly lyrics, it had all the ingredients for greatness. The first several versions clearly lacked something, which seemed to be fulfilled with the addition of horns – five times on the Giant Country Horn tour in 1991 and twice with the West Coast return of the horns (in 1994). Phish
Phish is an American rock band formed in Burlington, Vermont, in 1983. The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of genres, and a dedicated fan base. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, all of whom perform vocals, with Anastasio being the lead vocalist. The band was formed by Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, who were joined by McConnell in 1985. Holdsworth departed the band in 1986, and the lineup has remained stable since. Phish began to perform outside of New England in the late 1980s and experienced a rise in popularity in the mid 1990s. In October 2000, the band began a two-year hiatus that ended in December 2002, but they disbanded again in August 2004. ''Live Phish Vol. 19'' was recorded live at the Colonial Theater in Keene, New Hampshire, on July 12, 1991. This concert was recorded during the middle of the band's 1991 summer tour with the Giant Country Horns - a three-piece horn section that would learn and perform individual sections of Phish songs during concerts. Two of the three members of the horn section - Dave Grippo and Russell Remington - performed with Trey Anastasio's solo band in the 21st century. Rarities include two Charlie Parker covers: the one-time-only performance of " Moose the Mooche" and the Jaco Pastorius-infused "Donna Lee." ''Live Phish Vol. 10'' was recorded live at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus, Ohio on June 22, 1994. Some Phish hobbyists advance that the concert ranks among the five best the band has ever played, although the weight of reliable authority holds otherwise. It features the band on their 1994 summer tour. The group plays an experimental version of "Mike's Song," interpolating an early version of the Mike Gordon staple "Simple" and a jam based on the bass line and melody of The Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider," as well as a version of the rarely-played "Icculus." Bonus tracks include two songs from the Murat Theater in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 24, 1994. ''Live Phish Vol. 4'' was recorded live at the Drum Logos club in Fukuoka, Japan on June 14, 2000. At the time, Phish was one of the biggest live bands in America, consistently selling out amphitheaters and arenas. However, in Japan, the shows were smaller and much more intimate than the usual Phish concert. The overall mood of the music at the Fukuoka show was quiet and mellow. Most of the second set was tied together with extended excursions into quiet, ambient improvisation, especially on the half-hour version of "Twist." The audience remains dead silent through most of the band's performances but erupts at the end of each song. Users of Phish.net, the largest and quasi-official Phish fan website, rank the June 14, 2000 concert as the sixteenth highest rated concert in the band's history. Michael Eliot Gordon (born June 3, 1965) is an American bass guitarist and vocalist most recognized as a founding member of the band Phish. In addition to bass, Gordon is an accomplished banjo player, and is proficient at piano and guitar. He is also a filmmaker (''Rising Low'', ''Outside Out'') and author (''Mike's Corner''). He has released five solo studio albums and three studio albums with acoustic guitar pioneer Leo Kottke. Page Samuel McConnell (born May 17, 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American multi-instrumentalist most noted for his work as the keyboardist and a songwriter for the band Phish. In addition to having been a member of Phish since 1985, McConnell has been part of a number of other side projects, including leading the electronic jazz fusion band Vida Blue (band), Vida Blue and acting as a session musician for the comedy rock duo Tenacious D.
