Gulgong Guardian
The ''Gulgong Guardian'' (in full the ''Gulgong Guardian and District Mining Record'') was an English language newspaper published in Gulgong, New South Wales, Australia from 1871 to 1873. The newspaper was first published on 18 February 1871 by Thomas Frederic De Courcy Browne. The Illustrated Sydney News and New South Wales Agriculturalist and Grazier wrote that the Guardian "ably advocated the cause of mining reform." It published its final issue on 5 July 1873. Sydney newspaper '' The Evening News'' reported that the ''Gulgong Guardian'' had "ceased to exist" on 19 July 1873, with its plant bought by competitor the '' Gulgong Argus''. In the week before the newspaper ceased publishing, editor Browne, who had only just been released from one month's imprisonment for libel, had been placed on trial for embezzlement in relation to a company of which he had been secretary. ''The Albury Banner and Wodonga Express'' was a weekly English language newspaper published in Albury, New South Wales, Australia. History First printed and published on 3 January 1896 by George Adams for the proprietors of the ''Albury Banner and Wodonga Express''. It was published from 1896 to 1939. The paper became known as "The Cocky's Bible" because Adams advocated the cause of free settlers. From 1939 to 1949 it was published as ''The Albury Banner, Wodonga Express and Riverina Stock Journal'' and as the ''Albury Banner'' from 1949 to 1950. The ''Empire'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, Australia. It was published from 28 December 1850 to 14 February 1875, except for the period from 28 August 1858 to 23 May 1859, when publication was suspended. It was later absorbed by '' The Evening News''. History Henry Parkes founded the ''Empire'' and was its editor/proprietor until the business failed in August 1858. He made it "a newspaper destined to be the chief organ of mid-century liberalism and to serve as the rallying and reconciliation point for the sharpest radical and liberal minds of the day". Gulgong is a 19th-century gold rush town in the Central Tablelands and the wider Central West regions of the Australian state of New South Wales. The town is situated within the Mid-Western Regional Council local government area. It is located about north west of Sydney, and about 30 km north of Mudgee along the Castlereagh Highway. At the 2016 Census, Gulgong had a population of 2,521. Today, much of the 19th-century character of the town remains, contributing to its appeal as a tourist destination.
