Gulf State Championships
The Gulf State Championships was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1892 as the Gulf Coast Championships. It was first played at the Tampa Bay Lawn Tennis Club, Tampa Bay Hotel, Tampa, Florida, United States in 1892. In 1968 the final edition was played at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after which when it was downgraded from the main worldwide ILTF Circuit. History In 1892 the first Gulf Coast Championships (also known as the Tampa Bay Championships) were held in at the Tampa Bay Lawn Tennis Club, Tampa Bay Hotel, Tampa, Florida, United States and was played on outdoor hard cement courts. The first winner of the men's singles title was Albert Empie Wright, he defeated a former top 4 ranked English tennis player, Charles Walder Grinstead in the final, who was touring America at this time. USNLTA Circuit
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for tennis in the United States. A not-for-profit organization with more than 700,000 members, it invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grass-roots to the professional levels. The association was created to standardize rules and regulations and to promote and develop the growth of tennis in the United States. The USTA runs the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center which hosts the US Open every year. The USTA has leagues in most places for adults skill levels between beginner and pro. Bob Wrenn
Robert Duffield Wrenn (September 20, 1873 – November 12, 1925) was an American left-handed tennis player, four-time U.S. singles championship winner, and one of the first inductees in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Biography Wrenn was born in Highland Park, Illinois. Wrenn attended Harvard University, where he was a prominent quarterback on the football team. Wrenn was considered "one of Harvard's greatest all-around athletes," a star player at football, ice hockey, and baseball. Wrenn played a small role in the formation of collegiate ice hockey in the United States. In the fall of 1892, Wrenn and fellow tennis champion (and doubles partner) Malcolm Greene Chace played in an international tennis tournament in Niagara Falls, New York. ''Lubbock Avalanche-Journal'' is a newspaper based in Lubbock, Texas, United States. It is owned by Gannett. History ''The Lubbock Avalanche'' was founded in 1900 by John James Dillard and Thad Tubbs. According to Dillard, the name "Avalanche" was chosen due to his desire that the newspaper surprise the citizens of Lubbock. The newspaper was sold to James Lorenzo Dow in 1908. In 1922, the ''Avalanche'' became a daily newspaper (except for Mondays) and a year later added a morning edition. In 1926, the owners of the rival ''Lubbock Daily Journal'', editor Charles A. Steve Faulk
Steve Faulk (born June 1, 1947) is an American former professional tennis player. Faulk, a New Orleans native, played collegiate tennis for Louisiana State University and was SEC champion at No. 1 singles in 1970. He was a three-time first team All-SEC and in 1970 became the first LSU player to be an All-American. Active on the ILTF Circuit in the 1960s he won the Gulf State Championships in 1961, then on the professional tour in the 1970s, Faulk featured in singles main draws at the French Open and US Open, as well as in doubles at Wimbledon. Tom Karp
Thomas Karp (born October 13, 1946) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography Karp played tennis for University High School. Stan Smith beat him in the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament 1964 Boys’ High School final. Karp, a top-10 nationally ranked junior from Los Angeles, represented the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team and during the late 1960s played for the UCLA Bruins in varsity tennis. He earned All-American honors for the Bruins in 1968, during which year he was co-captain of the team. His professional career included an appearance in the singles main draw of the 1973 Wimbledon Championships. At the 1969 Maccabiah Games in Israel, he and partner Peter Fishbach were defeated by American Davis Cup player Allen Fox and Ronald Goldman in the semifinals. Ronald W. Fisher (born August 28, 1939) is an American former tennis player. Fisher, a player from Houston, played collegiate tennis for Rice University. An All-American for the Rice Owls, he was Southwest Conference singles and doubles champion in both 1958 and 1959. Jack Tuero
Jack Meredith Tuero (July 3, 1926 –- October 27, 2004) was an American tennis player. He is a member of the Louisiana Tennis Hall of Fame. His niece Linda Tuero was also a tennis player. Tuero was the son of Cuban-born baseball pitcher Oscar Tuero, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals. He lived in various cities growing up as his father had stints at several minor league teams and once he moved to New Orleans he began excelling at tennis. As a 17-year-old in 1943 he made the quarter-finals of the U.S. National Championships. A varsity tennis player for Tulane University, Tuero won all but one of his 60 conference matches and was the NCAA singles champion in 1949, coming from two sets down against Sam Match in the title decider.
