Guitar Heroes
The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's ''Guitar Heroes'' (2004) won best Classical-Crossover Album at the 47th Grammy Awards. The album pays respect to guitarists that have influenced LAGQ. It is widely regarded as the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's best record to date. While the only member of the quartet to include his own compositions on the album is Andrew York, the other members arranged different pieces. Composers on the album include Andrew York, Pat Metheny, Ralph Towner, Evan Hirschelman, Brian Head, Bryan Johanson, Chet Atkins and Steve Howe. Los Angeles Guitar Quartet
The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) is an American classical guitar ensemble that was formed in 1980. It consists of John Dearman, William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant and Matthew Greif (who replaced original member Andrew York at the end of 2006). They play nylon string guitars to imitate a variety of instruments and effects. They have played in many styles: baroque, bluegrass, flamenco, rock, and new-age. The quartet received a Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album in 2005 for ''Guitar Heroes''. Background Anisa Angarola assembled the quartet in 1980 at the University of Southern California with help from guitarist Pepe Romero. In 1990 Andrew York replaced Angarola. In 2006 York was replaced by Matthew Greif. The group's first album included works by Holst, Rossini, and Stravinsky. Although primarily a classical ensemble, the group dabbles in other genres. Telarc International Corporation
Telarc International Corporation is an American audiophile independent record label founded in 1977 by two classically trained musicians and former teachers, Jack Renner (recording engineer), Jack Renner and Robert Woods (producer), Robert Woods. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, the label has had a long association with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra, as well as with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide and AMG) is an American online music database. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Andrew York (guitarist)
Andrew York (born 1958) is an American Grammy Award winning classical guitarist and composer. Biography York was born in 1958 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, and grew up in Virginia. He received degrees from James Madison University in Virginia and the University of Southern California (USC). He studied in Spain, where he met classical guitarist John Williams. Williams has performed and recorded compositions by York. In 1989, York released his debut solo album, ''Perfect Sky'' ( Timeless, 1989). He was a member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet until 2006. York is the only alumnus in USC's history to have received their Distinguished Alumni Award twice, in 1997 as a member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and again in 2003 for his solo music career. Pat Metheny
Patrick Bruce Metheny ( ; born August 12, 1954) is an American jazz guitarist and composer. He is the leader of the Pat Metheny Group and is also involved in duets, solo works, and other side projects. His style incorporates elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, latin jazz, and jazz fusion. Metheny has three gold albums and 20 Grammy Awards and is the only person to win Grammys in 10 categories. He is the younger brother of jazz flugelhornist Mike Metheny. Ralph Towner
Ralph Towner (born March 1, 1940) is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and bandleader. He plays the twelve-string guitar, classical guitar, piano, synthesizer, percussion, trumpet and French horn. Biography Towner was born into a musical family in Chehalis, Washington, United States. His mother was a piano teacher and his father a trumpet player. Towner learned to improvise on the piano at the age of three. He began his career as a conservatory-trained classical pianist, attending the University of Oregon from 1958-1963, where he also studied composition with Homer Keller. Evan Hirschelman is an American classical guitarist and composer, born in Detroit, Michigan. He is known as a classical composer who incorporates a wide range of musical styles into his writing. His music has been recorded by some of today's most respected musicians, including the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang. His composition ''Lament and Wake'' is featured on the Grammy award-winning recording ''LAGQ's Guitar Heroes''. Brian Head (composer)
Brian Head (born October 14, 1964) is an American composer, guitarist, and music theory and composition professor. He performs frequently as a soloist and collaboratively with numerous groups, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Opera, New World Symphony, inauthentica, Jacaranda and Xtet. His compositions have been widely performed throughout the U.S. and abroad. Brian Head holds an unusual dual appointment at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, where he is a member of both the Classical Guitar and the Composition faculties, positions he has held since 2001. Bryan Johanson
Bryan Johanson (born 1951) is an American classical guitarist and composer. Johanson was born in Portland, Oregon. Johanson has performed, recorded and published works internationally. Johanson's works have won major awards from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival and School, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, UCLA and The Esztergom International Guitar Festival. Johanson studied composition with Charles Jones and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom. Johanson's compositions feature three symphonies, concertos for violin, cello and piano, numerous chamber works, song cycles and choral works, as well as compositions for solo instruments including the classical guitar. Chet Atkins
Chester Burton Atkins (June 20, 1924 – June 30, 2001), known as "Mr. Guitar" and "The Country Gentleman", was an American musician who, along with Owen Bradley and Bob Ferguson, helped create the Nashville sound, the country music style which expanded its appeal to adult pop music fans. He was primarily a guitarist, but he also played the mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and ukulele, and occasionally sang. Atkins's signature picking style was inspired by Merle Travis.
