Yue Chinese
Yue () is a group of similar Sinitic languages spoken in Southern China, particularly in Liangguang (the Guangdong and Guangxi provinces). The name Cantonese is often used for the whole group, but linguists prefer to reserve that name for the variety used in Guangzhou (Canton), Wuzhou (Ngchow), Hong Kong and Macau, which is the prestige dialect. Taishanese, from the coastal area of Jiangmen (Kongmoon) located southwest of Guangzhou, was the language of most of the 19th-century emigrants from Guangdong to Southeast Asia and North America. Most later migrants have been speakers of Cantonese. Yue varieties are not mutually intelligible with other varieties of Chinese. They are among the most conservative varieties with regard to the final consonants and tonal categories of Middle Chinese, but have lost several distinctions in the initial consonants and medial glides that other Chinese varieties have retained. Guinan is a recurring character in the '' Star Trek'' media franchise who has appeared in the television series '' Star Trek: The Next Generation'' and '' Star Trek: Picard'' and the films ''Star Trek Generations'' and '' Star Trek: Nemesis''. Edward F. Guinan is a professor in Villanova University's Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. He and two colleagues observed evidence of Neptune's ring system in 1968, which was later discovered by Voyager 2 in 1989. He was also involved in building Iran's first high-powered telescope in the 1970s. He has been, and continues to be, involved in various international astronomical collaborations, such as helping to organize teaching and development programs in North Korea. He received a B.S. degree in physics from Villanova University in 1964 and his doctoral degree in astronomy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. He was the Minister of Development of Venezuela from 1879 until 1880 under Antonio Guzmán Blanco. Mary Guinan is an American doctor specializing in public health, virology, and epidemiology. She is the dean at the School of Community Health Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Guinan is known for her work in the initial investigation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Matthew Guinan
Matthew "Ted" Guinan (October 14, 1910 – March 22, 1995) was an Irish labor organizer who was the cofounder and served as the second president of Transport Workers Union of America (TWU). Born in County Offaly, Ireland, he immigrated in 1929. He took a job as a trolley operator in 1933. In 1943, after six years as an unpaid volunteer organizer, he became a full-time organizer for TWU Local 100. He was able to negotiate a 40-hour work week for public and private bus workers. He became International Executive Vice President in 1952 and International Secretary Treasurer in 1956, and was re-elected in 1961 and 1965. Following a bitter New York City transit strike (for which Guinan and other leaders spent nine days in jail after refusing to call it off), President Mike Quill died at age 60, and Guinan succeeded his longtime friend.
