Guillaume Casman
Guillaume-Camille Casman (23 November 1854 – 14 May 1885) was a Belgian soldier, explorer and administrator for the International African Association and the Congo Free State. He was briefly commander of the Équateur station on the upper Congo. Early years Guillaume-Camille Casman was born in Brussels on 23 November 1854. He worked at the ''Société Belge des Chemins de Fer du Grand Central'' and was a sergeant in the ''chasseurs-éclaireurs'' (scouts) battalion of the Brussels civic guard. He joined the service of the International Association of the Congo and left for the Congo in November 1883. Colonial career Casman arrived in Vivi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Vivi and joined an expedition led by Captain Edmond Hanssens. Willem Frans Van Kerckhoven
Willem Frans Van Kerckhoven, or Guillaume François van Kerckhoven (28 January 1853 – 10 August 1892) was a Belgian soldier, explorer, colonial administrator who was active in the service of the International Association of the Congo and the subsequent Congo Free State. He is known for his extended expedition through the Uele River basin and onward towards the Nile, during which he cleared the Arab slave traders from the region and established a Belgian presence. He died in an accident before reaching the Nile. Early years (1853–1883) Willem Frans Van Kerckhoven was born in Mechelen, Belgium, on 28 January 1853. Georges Pagels
Georg Vilhelm Pagels, or 'Georges-Guillaume Pagels (18 February 1855 – 31 March 1897) was a Swedish officer in the service of the International African Association who briefly commanded Équateur Station (now Mbandaka). Early years Georges-Guillaume Pagels was born in Lilla-Malma parish, Södermanland, Sweden on 18 February 1855. His parents were Victor Pagels and Ulrica Nyblaens. He entered the Stockholm Military Academy on 14 July 1875. On 24 November 1876 he was appointed a second lieutenant in the infantry. In 1878 he became a second lieutenant in the Södermanland regiment, and in 1887 a lieutenant in the army. Colonial career On 2 March 1883 Pagels took leave from the Swedish army and entered the services of the International African Association (AIA). Jacques Savorgnan di Brazza (or Giacomo Savorgnan de Brazza e Cergneu; 14 December 1859 – 29 February 1888) was an Italian naturalist, mountaineer and explorer, younger brother of Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. Early years Giacomo Savorgnan di Brazzà was born in Rome on 14 December 1859, the 12th of 13 children. His parents were Ascanio Savorgnan di Brazzà, a sculptor and painter who had studied under Antonio Canova, and Giacinta Simonetti, Marquise of Gavignano. His father came from a liberal family which owned houses in Brazzacco (Moruzzo), Udine and Soleschiano ( Manzano). He was descended from the old nobility of Friuli. Arvid Wester
Arvid Mauritz Wester (10 June 1856 – 11 July 1914) was a Swedish soldier who was active in the service of the Belgians in the Congo. For almost two years he commanded the remote station at Stanley Falls, where he had to deal with hostile local people and Arabs. Early years (1856–1883) Arvid Mauritz Wester was born on 10 June 1856 in Karlskoga parish, Örebro County, Sweden. He was descended from the younger son of Peder Wester. Edde Gleerup
Sten Edvard Gleerup, or Edde Gleerup, (13 June 1860 – 1928) was a Swedish soldier and explorer. He was the first Swede and eighth European to cross Africa. Life Sten Edvard Gleerup was born on 13 June 1860 in Chicago. His father was Georg Josef Teodor Gleerup, a photographer in Chicago and then in Lund, and his mother was Wendela Sofia Hallström. In 1879 he was appointed a lieutenant in the Southern Scanian Infantry Regiment. Gleerup joined the service of the Congo in 1883, and in 1884 was appointed head of the Kimpoko Station at Stanley Pool. He built a new station there. On 11 November 1884 Edmond Hanssens left Léopoldville in an expedition with three steamers: the ''Royal'', ''A.I.A.'' and '' En Avant''. Kimpoko
Kimpoko is a district within Maluku municipality in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Location Kimpoko is on the northeast shore of the Pool Malebo near where a branch of the Congo River enters the Pool to east of the Îles de Kabongo. It is in Kinshasa Province, about as the crow flies to the northeast of the capital city of Kinshasa. History In June 1883 Louis-Gustave Amelot was appointed commander of Kimpoko station. At Kimpoko Amelot got into an argument with a chief and six of his headmen over the rotting carcass of a hippopotamus, which resulted in their being killed. Soon there were rumors that the post was in danger, and Henry Morton Stanley ordered the complete evacuation of its staff and equipment to Léopoldville. Charles Liebrechts
Charles Adolphe Marie Liebrechts (7 May 1858 – 14 July 1938) was a Belgian soldier, explorer and administrator in the Congo Free State. Early years (1858–1882) Charles Adolphe Marie Liebrechts was born in Antwerp on 7 May 1858. His parents were François Liebrechts and Marie Huybrechts. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the army. He became a soldier in the 3rd ''chasseurs à pied''. He entered the Military School in 1876, specializing in artillery and engineering.
