Guerra Family Of California
The Guerra family is a prominent Californio family of Southern California. Members of the family held extensive rancho grants and numerous important positions, including numerous Mayors of Santa Barbara, California Senators, a Lieutenant Governor of California, and a signer of the California Constitution. Notable members José de la Guerra José de la Guerra y Noriega, born in 1779, is the founder of the family. Popularly known as ''El Capitán'', he came to California in 1793. He enlisted in 1798, serving over 52 years in military service. He served as acting Commandant of the Presidio of Monterey in 1804, Commandant of the Presidio of San Diego from 1806 to 1807, and most notably as Commandant of the Presidio of Santa Barbara, from 1827 to 1842. José Antonio de la Guerra y Noriega (March 6, 1779 – February 18, 1858) was a Californio military officer, ranchero, and founder of the prominent Guerra family of California. He served as the Commandant of the Presidio of Santa Barbara and the Presidio of San Diego. Biography José de la Guerra was born 1779 at Novales, Cantabria, Spain. Rancho Los Álamos was a Ranchos of California, Mexican land grant in present-day Santa Barbara County, California given in 1839 by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado, Juan Alvarado to José Antonio de la Guerra, a son of José de la Guerra y Noriega. The 1st Battalion of Native Cavalry, California Volunteers was a cavalry battalion in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Recruits were largely drawn from the Californio population (colloquially known as "Native Californians"), though its ranks included Yaqui and Mission Indians as well as immigrants from Mexico, Hispano America and Europe (particularly France). Goleta (; ; Spanish for "Schooner") is a city in southern Santa Barbara County, California, United States. It was incorporated as a city in 2002, after a long period as the largest unincorporated populated area in the county. Rancho Nicasio was a Mexican land grant of granted to the Coast Miwok indigenous people in 1835, located in the present-day Marin County, California, a tract of land that stretched from San Geronimo to Tomales Bay.
