Guatemala At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Guatemala competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's fourteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in 1952, despite failing to register any athletes in three other editions (1956 to 1964). Guatemalan Olympic Committee ( es, Comité Olímpico Guatemalteco) confirmed a team of 21 athletes, 15 men and 6 women, to compete in 10 sports. It was the nation's largest delegation sent to the Olympics since 1996, surpassing the record of 19 athletes set in London 2012. Among the Guatemalan athletes, two of them returned for their third consecutive appearance in Rio de Janeiro: badminton player Kevin Cordón and Laser sailor Juan Ignacio Maegli. Guatemalan Olympic Committee
The Guatemalan Olympic Committee ( es, Comité Olímpico Guatemalteco, abbreviated as COG) is a non-profit organization serving as the National Olympic Committee of Guatemala and a part of the International Olympic Committee and PASO. It was formed in 1947 and recognized by the IOC that same year. As of 2022, COG is officially suspended by IOC. Suspension On 15 October 2022 International Olympic Committee officially suspended National Olympic Committee of Guatemala. As a result of suspension, any athletes of Guatemala can no longer represent the country and compete under the country’s flag/name at the Olympic Games and other international multi-sports events as well as Guatemalan NOC lost all the funding from IOC. Mirna Sucely Ortiz Flores (born 28 February 1987) is a Guatemalan racewalker. Having begun in the sport in 1998, she won a Central American youth title in 2000, and was a promising young athlete in her discipline, but due to financial hardship, she had to abandon the sport at the age of 14. She then returned to a competitive level in 2011, urged by coach Rigoberto Medina. The women's 20 kilometres walk at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was held on 19 August on a route along Pontal.
