Guam competed in the Summer Olympic Games for the first time at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The Guam National Olympic Committee was formed in 1976 and recognized by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in 1986. Jonathan Sakovich
Jonathan Dehe Sakovich ( ; born June 26, 1970) is a former competition swimmer from Saipan who has represented Guam and the United States at international events. At the 1988 Olympics he represented Guam, where he set the Guam records in the 400-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley, all three of which still stand as of May 2009. Sakovich accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he swam for coach Randy Reese and coach Skip Foster's Florida Gators swimming and diving teams in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition from 1989 to 1992. During his NCAA career, he received seven All-American honors. Sakovich graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in health and human performance in 1997. Swimming At The 1996 Summer Olympics
The swimming competition at the 1996 Summer Olympics was held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, United States. There were 762 competitors from 117 countries. This was the last Olympics where swimming B-finals were held. At the time of the games, the facility had a temporary 50m warm-up pool located behind the locker rooms and entry concourse (on the ground); as well as a temporary roof, and open walls (there were wall-like structures/curtains at the diving well and turning end of the pool). The open walls allowed for temporary seating to be in place during the games. A wall and new roof have since been placed on the facility.
