The Grão-Pará Ecological Station ( pt, Estação Ecológica Grão-Pará is a strictly protected ecological station in the state of Pará, Brazil. It managed by the state of Pará. With of well-preserved Amazon rainforest it is the largest fully protected tropical forest conservation unit in the world. Location The Grão-Pará Ecological Station is on the left bank of the Amazon River in the west of the state of Pará. It contains parts of the basins of the Maicuru, Curuá, Cuminapanema, Erepecuru, Trombetas and Mapuera rivers. It has an area of , which makes it the largest fully protected tropical forest conservation unit on the planet. The Palace of the Grand Pará (Portuguese: ''Palácio do Grão-Pará'') is a royal palace located in the city of Petrópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was a secondary palace of the Brazilian Imperial Family, serving to allocate the servants and guests of the Palace of Petropólis. It is currently the only palace still belonging to the Brazilian Imperial Family, being the only royal palace in the Americas occupied by a royal family. The Prince of Grão-Pará was the title bestowed on the eldest son of the Prince Imperial of Brazil. The title holder was the second in the line of succession to the throne of the Empire of Brazil, after the Prince Imperial. The State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão ( pt, Estado do Grão-Pará e Maranhão) was one of the states of the Portuguese Empire. History The state was created on 31 July 1751 by order of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, the Secretary of the State for Joseph I of Portugal. The state was the successor to the State of Maranhão. While there were limited territorial changes, Maranhão was politically and economically restructured and its capital was moved from São Luís, in the Captaincy of Maranhão, to Santa Maria de Belém, in the Captaincy of Pará, which was raised to a unified state with Maranhão and had its name changed to Grão-Pará (English: Great wide river).
