Grupo De Apoyo Mutuo
Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo (GAM) is a Guatemalan organization. It is a collaboration between two of Guatemala's longest standing human rights-based NGO, Grupo De Apoyo Mutuo and Haverford College Libraries. GAM itself was founded in 1984 during the internal armed conflict with a group of people looking for their missing loved ones. The relationship between GAM and Haverford College Libraries began when a Haverford professor and GAM met while researching in Guatemala. Both parties shared a common interest in preserving GAM's archive and they quickly collaborated. The main goal of GAM is to bring together the families of people who forcibly disappeared during the Guatemalan Civil War from 1960 to 1996 and to seek justice for people who disappeared. Over the past couple of years GAM has grown substantially in size and influence;additionally, Haverford has begun to fund projects for students to do. Haverford College
Haverford College ( ) is a private liberal arts college in Haverford, Pennsylvania. It was founded as a men's college in 1833 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), began accepting non-Quakers in 1849, and became coeducational in 1980. The college offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 31 majors across humanities, social sciences and natural sciences disciplines. It is a member of the Tri-College Consortium, which includes Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore College, Swarthmore colleges, as well as the Quaker Consortium, which includes those schools as well as the University of Pennsylvania. Guatemalan Civil War
The Guatemalan Civil War was a civil war in Guatemala fought from 1960 to 1996 between the government of Guatemala and various leftist rebel groups. The government forces have been condemned for committing genocide against the Maya population of Guatemala during the civil war and for widespread human rights violations against civilians. The context of the struggle was based on longstanding issues of unfair land distribution; European-descended residents and foreign companies, such as the American United Fruit Company, had dominated control over much of the land, leading to conflicts with the rural poor. Nobel Peace Prize
