Grozny
Grozny ( rus, Грозный, p=ˈgroznɨj; ce, Соьлжа-ГӀала, translit=Sölƶa-Ġala), also spelled Groznyy, is the capital city of Chechnya, Russia. The city lies on the Sunzha River. According to the 2010 census, it had a population of 271,573 — up from 210,720 recorded in the 2002 census, but still only about two-thirds of 399,688 recorded in the 1989 census. It was previously known as (until 1870). Names In Russian, "Grozny" means "fearsome", "menacing", or "redoubtable", the same word as in Ivan Grozny ( Ivan the Terrible). The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (; ce, Нохчийн Республик Ичкери, Nóxçiyn Respublik Içkeri; russian: Чеченская Республика Ичкерия; abbreviated as "ChRI" or "CRI") was a ''de facto'' state that controlled most of the former Checheno-Ingush ASSR. On 30 November 1991, a referendum was held in Ingushetia in which the results dictated its separation from the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, joining the Russian Federation instead as a constituent republic. Ramzan Kadyrov
Ramzan Akhmadovich Kadyrov ce, КъадаргӀеран Ахьмат-кӏант Рамзан, translit= (born 5 October 1976) is a Russian politician who currently serves as the Head of the Chechen Republic. He was formerly affiliated to the Chechen Independence movement, through his father who was the separatist appointed mufti of Chechnya. He is a colonel general in the Russian military. Kadyrov is the son of former Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov, who switched sides in the Second Chechen War by offering his service to Vladimir Putin's administration in Russia and became Chechen president in 2003. Akhmad Kadyrov was assassinated in May 2004. In February 2007, Ramzan Kadyrov replaced Alu Alkhanov as president, shortly after he had turned 30, which is the minimum age for the post. Grozny-City Towers
The Grozny-City Towers (russian: Грозный-сити) is a five-star skyscraper hotel and business centre complex located near the Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque in Grozny, Chechnya. 2013 fire On April 3, 2013, the Grozny-City Towers Facade Clocks in Grozny, Chechnya, Russia caught fire and one side of the 40-story building was engulfed in flames. No one was injured or killed in the blaze. More than 100 firefighters and 16 fire engines fought the blaze. The building known locally as "Olympus" housed a 5 star luxury hotel and an apartment belonging to French film star and French tax exile Gérard Depardieu, whose apartment was on the 27th floor facing the "Heart of Grozny." The Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque (russian: Мечеть Ахмата Кадырова, Mechet Akhmata Kadyrova; ce, Кадыров Ахьмадан цӀарах дина маьждиг) is located in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. Ivan IV Vasilyevich (russian: Ива́н Васи́льевич; 25 August 1530 – ), commonly known in English as Ivan the Terrible, was the grand prince of Moscow from 1533 to 1547 and the first Tsar of all Russia from 1547 to 1584. Vladimir Putin Avenue (russian: Проспект Владимира Путина, Prospekt Vladimira Putina), formerly Victory Avenue (russian: Проспект Победы, Prospekt Pobedy), is a prospekt in the center of Grozny. The length of the avenue is 1880 meters. The prospekt is named in honor of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The avenue is one of the oldest streets in the city.
