Groupe De Combat 12
Groupe de Combat 12 (GC 12) 'Les Cigognes' ('The Storks') was the most celebrated and successful French Air Service Groupe de Chasse during the World War I. Its roster included Georges Guynemer, René Dorme, Alfred Heurteaux, René Fonck, Raoul Echard, Joseph-Henri Guiguet, Roland Garros, Mathieu Tenant de la Tour, Jean Laulhé, among other French World War I aces. The fliers from CG 12 carried different stork insignia on their planes. History It originated as an ad hoc group, ''Groupement de Combat de la Somme''. Four ''escadrilles'' were consolidated in this group—'' Escadrilles N3'', ''N26'', '' N73'', and '' N103''. ''Escadrille 26'' is a squadron of the French Air Force founded in 1914 and still active today. History Escadrille 26 was founded on 26 August 1914, at Arras. ''Escadrille 65'' of the French Air Force was established during World War I. It was founded at Lyon-Bron Airport on 2 August 1915. ''Escadrille 62'' is a French Air Force squadron. It was founded on 11 August 1915 at Lyon–Bron Airport. History ''Escadrille 62'' was originally equipped with Farman two-seater reconnaissance aircraft; thus, its first designation was ''Escadrille MF62''. Georges Guynemer
Georges Guynemer (, 24 December 1894 – 11 September 1917 Missing in action, MIA) was the second highest-scoring French Third Republic, French Flying ace, fighter ace with 54 victories during World War I, and a French people, French Folk hero, national hero at the time of his death. Guynemer's death was a profound shock to France. Early life and military career Georges Marie Ludovic Jules Guynemer was born in Paris to a wealthy and aristocratic family. His father was Paul Guynemer. His mother, Julie Noémi Doynel de Saint-Quentin's ancestry included King Louis XIV. Guynemer experienced an often sickly childhood. Nevertheless, he succeeded as an aviator through his enormous drive and self-confidence. He was originally rejected five times for military service due to frailty, but was accepted for training as a mechanic in late 1914.
