Group 90
Group 90 is an informal arts group in Singapore, committed to the study and interpretation, and promotion of the human nudity as an art form. It was founded the late Brother Joseph McNally, along with founding members S. Namasivayam, Chia Wai Hon and Sim Tong Khern, who subscribe to the European art tradition of using the human body in developing artistic mastery in depicting form, perceptual acuity and fluency in drawing. History Before 1987, Singapore had no avenues for expressing nude in art. Neither Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts nor the Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts offered life drawing classes, and the conservative Singapore art market did not favour nude-themed art for fear of offending those with an aversion for nudity. Joseph McNally (brother)
Brother Joseph McNally (10 August 1923 – 27 August 2002), was an Irish people, Irish Brother (Christian), brother from the De La Salle Brothers. He was the founder of St Patrick's Arts Centre, now known as LASALLE College of the Arts, in Singapore. Early life McNally grew up in County Mayo. He began studying the arts in high school. McNally left his hometown when he was 14 to join the De La Salle Brothers. He completed his novitiate at the De La Salle Retreat in Castletown, and his scholasticate at De La Salle College, Mallow, De La Salle College in Mallow, County Cork. In 1943, after graduating from De La Salle College, McNally taught at the college, where his interest in the arts grew. He took art classes at the Mallow Technical School in the evenings while teaching in the daytime. The Paragon, Singapore
The Paragon is a luxury shopping complex located in the Orchard Road area of Singapore. Background It was redeveloped in the late 1990s, transforming it into a modern glass-covered building. It has been described as “posh and sleek”. In January 2008, Paragon was embarked on an $82 million facelift which included a $37 million land premium to expand its commercial space on the nearby space which was once a former site of The Promenade as its new wing, which saw the addition of three more floors of office and medical space as well as new retails stores. Led by the architecture firm DP Architects, the makeover was completed in December 2008. Paragon emerged with a contemporary facade. Choy Weng Yang () is a Singaporean artist, curator and arts writer and a proponent of the art fraternity in post-independent Singapore. His literary contributions on post-modern arts in Singapore, had helped shaped the contemporary art scene in Singapore. Born 12 July 1930 in Singapore, Choy graduated with a National Diploma of Art UK from Hornsey College of Art in 1962 and received the Art Teachers' Certificate (UK) from the University of London Institute of Education in 1963. Sir Roy Yorke Calne, FRCP, FRCS, FRS (born 30 December 1930) is a British surgeon and pioneer in organ transplantation. Career His most notable achievements are the world's first liver, heart, and lung transplant together with John Wallwork in 1987; the first successful combined stomach, intestine, pancreas, liver, and kidney cluster transplant in 1994, the first liver transplantation operation in Europe in 1968, and the first intestinal transplant in the UK in 1992. Calne is a fellow of the Royal Society and was Professor of Surgery at Cambridge University between 1965 and 1998 where he initiated the kidney transplant program.
