Grou ( nl, Grouw) is a town in the province Friesland of the Netherlands and had around 5655 citizens in January 2017. Since 2014 Grou is part of the municipality of Leeuwarden. The town is located on the lake and the . Heineken operated a distribution centre for Friesland in Grou for 25 years until 2004. It used to be the capital of the municipality of before the reorganization of municipalities in 1984, and capital of the municipality of Boarnsterhim until 2014. While the rest of the Netherlands celebrates Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) on December 5, Grou instead celebrates a unique local variation of this children's holiday known as on February 21. In local lore Sint Piter is a distinct character separate from Saint Nicholas, and was historically known as the patron saint for local fishermen. De Haensmolen, Grou
De Haensmolen is a Hollow Post mill in Grou, Friesland, Netherlands which was rebuilt in 2007 after it was demolished by a boat in 2004. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 22917. (Click on "Technische gegevens" to view.) History The mill was probably built in the 18th century to drain the Gallelannen. In 1941 it was bought by the province of Friesland. The mill was restored in 1993. The original location of the mill was at the junction of the Prinses Margrietkanaal and the Pikmeer. (Click on "Geschiedenis" to view.) On 9 January 2004, the mill was demolished in an accident in which the was in collision with the riverbank where the mill was located. The Brothers Halbertsma were three brothers born in the Frisian village of Grou towards the end of the 18th century, who played a role of crucial importance for the development of a written literature in the Western Frisian language.Breuker, p. 587.Jensma, p. 197. These three brothers were: * Justus (or Joast) Hiddes Halbertsma (1789–1869). He studied theology in Amsterdam, and afterwards was a Mennonite minister in Bolsward and since 1822 in Deventer. The Protestant church of Grou or Saint Peter's churchAlle middeleeuwse kerken: van Harlingen tot Wilhelmshaven, P Karstkarel, p. 125 and 126 is a religious building in Grou, Netherlands, one of the many medieval churches in Friesland. The Romanesque church was built in the first half of the 13th century out of tuffstone. Already in the 13th century the church was heightened. In the 15th century the church was lengthened to the west and heightened for the second time with Brick. The current tower dates from the early 15th century. The monumental Pipe organ was built in 1853 by L. van Dam & Zn. from Leeuwarden. The church is located on the Kerkstraat 4 and was once a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Peter but became a Protestant church after the Protestant reformation. De Bird is a Hollow Post mill in Grou, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in the 18th century. The mill is also known as De Burd and Koopmans Molen. Although not in full working order, it can turn in the wind. It is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 22915. (Click on "Technische gegevens" to view.) History Although a mill has stood on this site since 1640, ''De Bird'' was built in the 18th century. It was built to drain the De Burd polder, which was part of the Groot Jetsma farm. ''De Bird'' was built for A J de Jong. A later owner was Simon Koopmans, giving the mill its alternate name of ''Koopmans Molen''. In 1878, the mill was sold at auction for ƒ500.
