Groeben Family
The Groeben family (also Gröben or von der Groeben) is the name of an old German nobility, German noble family, originating in the Altmark region. The lords von der Groeben belonged to the nobility of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, and moved from there to the Margraviate of Brandenburg, then to East Prussia. Hans Von Der Groeben
Hans von der Groeben (14 May 1907 – 6 March 2005) was a German diplomat, lawyer and journalist and member of the European Commission. Von der Groeben was born in Langheim (today Łankiejmy, Poland) near Rastenburg, East Prussia. A son of landowner Georg von der Groeben and Eva von Mirbach, he studied jurisprudence and political economics at the Universities of Berlin, Bonn and Göttingen. After the state exams he became a government advisor in 1933 at the Ministry of Nutrition (Reichsernährungsministerium) and in 1937 transferred to his final advisory position for credit and cooperatives (Referats für das Kredit- und Genossenschaftswesen). For periods during the Second World War he served as a reserve in the armed forces, ending up as a first lieutenant. After the war he became a director of government in the Treasury of Lower Saxony. Friedrich Von Der Groeben
Friedrich von der Groeben (1645–1712) was a Prussian aristocrat and commander of the Foreign Legion of King John III Sobieski in the Battle of Vienna. Von der Groeben joined the ''Foreign Legion'' or ''German Infantry'' in Polish military service about 1670 and became a lieutenant colonel in 1675 and by the end of the same year its commander and colonel. After John III Sobieski became King of Poland in 1674 he sent von der Groeben with diplomatic tasks to the Tatars and to the Ottoman Empire to find out as much as possible about the enemy's political and military intentions. In the Battle of Vienna he captured a pompous Turkish tent, which is claimed to have been the official tent of Kara Mustafa Pasha. The tent was stored at the manor of Groß Schwansfeld, an estate von der Groeben bought in 1686, till 1907, when it came to the exhibitions of the Berlin Zeughaus. Kurmark
The German term ''Kurmark'' (archaic ''Churmark'', "Electoral March") referred to the Imperial State held by the margraves of Brandenburg, who had been awarded the electoral (''Kur'') dignity by the Golden Bull of 1356. In early modern times, ''Kurmark'' proper denoted the western part of the margraviate to the exclusion of later acquisitions. Territory The Kurmark included the Altmark in the west and the Mittelmark, core territory of the 10th century Northern March, as well as the Uckermark region in the northeast and Prignitz in the northwest.
