Grindavík Women's Basketball
The Grindavík women's basketball team, commonly known as Grindavík or UMFG for short, is the women's basketball department of Ungmennafélag Grindavíkur multi-sport club, based in the town of Grindavík in Iceland. It won the national championship in 1997 and the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 2008 and 2015. Recent history In April 2019, Grindavík defeated 1. deild kvenna champions Fjölnir, 3-0, in the promotion playoffs for a seat in the Úrvalsdeild. With the worst record in the league, the team was relegated from the Úrvalsdeild in March 2020 after the final games of the season and the playoffs were canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic in Iceland. In 2021, Grindavík defeated 1. deild kvenna champions Njarðvík, 3-2, in the promotion playoffs finals. After losing the first two games, the team mounted a improbable comeback by winning the next three games. Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
Úrvalsdeild kvenna; English: Women's Premier League, known as Subway deild kvenna for sponsorship reasons, is the highest basketball competition among women's clubs in Iceland. It is administrated by the Icelandic Basketball Federation. It was founded in 1952 and, until 2007, it was known as 1. deild kvenna (English: Women's First division). Erla Þorsteinsdóttir (basketball)
Erla Þorsteinsdóttir (born 8 March 1978) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She was a key player on the Keflavík team that won six Icelandic championships and seven Icelandic basketball cups during her stay there. In 2001 she was voted as one of the twelve players on the team of the 20th century. She was named the Úrvalsdeild Domestic Player of the Year in 2000. Early life Erla was born in Keflavík in 1978. She started practicing basketball with Keflavík at the age of 11. She was a promising golfer in her youth and was a member of the Icelandic junior national golf teams. Alexander Pavlovich Ermolinskij (russian: Александр Павлович Ермолинский; born November 11, 1959) is an Ukraninan-Icelandic basketball coach and a former basketball player. He was an assistant coach for Nadezhda Orenburg from 2010 to 2021. He played for both the Soviet Union national basketball team and Icelandic national basketball team. Early life Ermolinskij was born in Vologda in the Soviet Union. Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson
Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson is an Icelandic former basketball coach and former basketball player. As a coach, he has won three Icelandic men's championships and has guided his team to the Icelandic national finals a record seven times. Friðrik was the general manager of the Icelandic Basketball Association from 2006 to 2014 and coached the Icelandic men's national basketball team from 1999 to 2003. Guðmundur Bragason (born 21 April 1967) is a former Icelandic professional basketball player and coach. He spent most of his career with Grindavík in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild, winning the national championship there in 1996. Tamara Bowie (born June 3, 1981) is an American former professional basketball player. In 2007, she was named the Úrvalsdeild kvenna Foreign Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring and rebounds. She played professionally in Iceland, Latvia, Israel, Greece and Bulgaria, where she won the national championship in 2011. Sigrún Sjöfn Ámundadóttir
Sigrún Sjöfn Ámundadóttir (born 23 November 1988) is an Icelandic former basketball player. During her career, she has won the Icelandic championship two times, in 2006 and 2007, and the Icelandic Basketball Cup four times. She is the Úrvalsdeild kvenna all-time career leader in rebounds and games played and in the league's top four in scoring, assists and steals. Petrúnella Skúladóttir (born 1 August 1985) is an Icelandic former basketball player and a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. During her career, she won the Icelandic championship once, with Njarðvík in 2012, and the Icelandic Basketball Cup three times. Penni Ann Peppas (born July 2, 1972) is an American former professional basketball player. She was the first foreign born professional player in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild kvenna, where she won multiple national championships and scoring titles. College Peppas played for University of the Ozarks from 1990 to 1994 and left as the schools allt time leader in total points (2170). Iceland After graduating in 1994, Peppas signed with Breiðablik in Iceland, becoming the first foreign born professional player in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild kvenna. Ólöf Helga Pálsdóttir Woods (born 24 May 1985) is an Icelandic professional basketball coach and a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team.
