Grimsby School of Art (est. in 1886) is a British art school in North East Lincolnshire, England. It is part of the Grimsby Institute since 2004. History Grimsby School of Art's history can be traced back 1886, when an Art Class was established in the town. The students were awarded certificates the South Kensington Department of Science & Art, the forerunner of the Royal College of Art. The building for the schoold, that got the name of Grimsby College of Art & Design, was designed in 1894 by Herbert Scaping. The building is now derelict, the Art School becoming the East Coast College of Art and Design, part of the Grimsby Institute since 2004. North East Lincolnshire is a Unitary authority area with borough status in Lincolnshire, England. It borders the borough of North Lincolnshire and districts of West Lindsey and East Lindsey. The Royal College of Art (RCA) is a public research university in London, United Kingdom, with campuses in South Kensington, Battersea and White City. It is the only entirely postgraduate art and design university in the United Kingdom. It offers postgraduate degrees in art and design to students from over 60 countries. History The RCA was founded in Somerset House in 1837 as the Government School of Design or Metropolitan School of Design. Richard Burchett became head of the school in 1852. Herbert Scaping
Herbert C Scaping (1866-1934) was an architect who worked in Grimsby, Lincolnshire in the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau styles. He was born in Rathfarnham, co Dublin before his family moved to Hull, his only known family are his two daughters Rathlea and Rathgowry. He trained with Smith and Broderick of Hull, setting up his own practice in Grimsby in 1890. He became the Lincoln Diocesan surveyor and surveyor to Lord Heneage. Architect to the Grimsby Education Committee and Board of Guardians. His office was at Court Chambers in Grimsby. David Tarttelin
David Tarttelin (born 1929) is an English painter. Early life and education As a child during World War II, Tarttelin was Evacuations of civilians in Britain during World War II, evacuated from Grimsby to Kirkstead, near Woodhall Spa, and attended Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Horncastle. He lived on a working farm which functioned with horse-drawn machinery, aspects of which have informed his work since. Returning to Grimsby at the end of the war he studied at Wintringham Grammar School, where he was taught by the artist Ernest Worrall who encouraged him to apply for University College London's Slade School of Fine Art. He was accepted for the school at the age of 17, and studied under Randolph Schwabe and Sir William Coldstream. Others teaching at the Slade during Tarttelin's time were Sir Thomas Monnington, P.R.A., and visiting tutors Sir Stanley Spencer, Victor Pasmore and Lucian Freud. Harold Gosney
Harold Gosney is an artist and sculptor. Many of Gosney's commissioned works are in the public domain; notably at York Art Gallery and on permanent display in Ripon, York and Chester cathedrals. Career Gosney became a student at Grimsby School of Art in 1954. He completed their Foundation course with such success that, two years later, he was offered a place at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art. He won several prizes whilst studying at the Slade, eventually specialising in theatre design. In 1960, Gosney returned to teach at the Grimsby School of Art. He became deeply interested in sculpture from this point onwards. Gosney has worked in wood and copper with favourite themes being birds, horses and the female form.
