Alan Gribben is a professor emeritus of English at Auburn University at Montgomery in Alabama and a Mark Twain scholar. He was distinguished research professor from 1998 to 2001 and the Dr. Guinevera A. Nance Alumni Professor from 2006 to 2009. He engendered widespread controversy in 2011 when he announced the publication of expurgated versions of Twain's works. Edited version of ''Tom Sawyer'' and ''Huckleberry Finn'' Gribben published a new combined edition of Twain's '' Tom Sawyer'' (1876) and '' Adventures of Huckleberry Finn'' (1884) with NewSouth Books in February 2011. This edition replaces the word "nigger" (which occurs 219 times in the original ''Huckleberry Finn'' novel) with "slave", " Injun Joe" with "Indian Joe," and " half-breed" with "half-blood". No other changes to the original texts are planned besides these word replacements. Only 7,500 copies are planned. Darren Gribben
Darren Gribben (born 27 March 1986) is a Scottish semi-professional footballer who plays as a striker for Camelon Juniors. Gribben has played for Hamilton Academical, Cowdenbeath, Forfar Athletic, Stirling Albion, Brechin City, Stranraer, Berwick Rangers, Dumbarton, Bo'ness United and Arbroath. Career Gribben broke into Hamilton Academical's first team at the age of 16, making his debut in the Scottish Football League in January 2003 in a match against Stenhousemuir. Gribben was released by the club in August 2004, and he later signed with Cowdenbeath, where he was named the Scottish Football League's Young Player of the Month in January 2012. He joined Forfar Athletic in September 2005, 2007, before being released in April 2007. Edward Gribben was a World War I flying ace credited with five aerial victories. He became a lieutenant-colonel in the Territorial Army between the wars, returning to the RAF in World War II, and rising to the rank of squadron leader. Biography Early life and background Gribben was born in County Down, Ireland, and in the 1911 Census was recorded as resident at Dunnanew, Rossconor, unmarried, aged 23, and working as a draper's assistant in Castlewellan. He was living with his mother Alice Gribben, father Thomas, and six siblings. World War I Gribben joined the army soon after the outbreak of World War I, being commissioned as a second lieutenant (on probation) in the 5th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles on 15 August 1914.
