Grey Peaks National Park
Grey Peaks is a national park in Far North Queensland, Australia, 1,374 km northwest of Brisbane. It is part of the Coastal Wet Tropics Important Bird Area, identified as such by BirdLife International because of its importance for the conservation of lowland tropical rainforest birds. The forests of the national park dominate are dominated by large-fruited red mahogany '' Eucalyptus pellita'' and red turpentine ''Syncarpia glomulifera''. Far North Queensland (FNQ) is the northernmost part of the Australian state of Queensland. Coastal Wet Tropics Important Bird Area
The Coastal Wet Tropics Important Bird Area comprises a disjunct 521 km2 stretch of coastal and subcoastal land in tropical Far North Queensland, Australia. It extends from just south of Cairns in the north for about 150 km to Cardwell in the south. It is important for the conservation of lowland rainforest birds, especially southern cassowaries. Description Most of the site is made up of low hills and ranges, with some areas of floodplain forest. The native vegetation is mainly tropical rainforest, with smaller areas of open eucalypt and paperbark forests and mangroves. ''Eucalyptus pellita'', commonly known as the large-fruited red mahogany, is a species of medium to tall tree that is endemic to north-eastern Queensland. It has rough, fibrous or flaky bark on the trunk and branches, lance-shaped to egg-shaped adult leaves, flower buds in groups of seven, white flowers and cup-shaped to conical fruit. ''Syncarpia glomulifera'', commonly known as the turpentine tree, or yanderra, is a tree of the family Myrtaceae native to New South Wales and Queensland in Australia, which can reach in height. It generally grows on heavier soils. The cream flowers appear in spring and are fused into compound flowerheads.
