Gregory W. Becker (born ) is an American business executive who served as the chief executive officer of SVB Financial Group from 2011 to 2023. He also served as the final chief executive officer of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and a board member of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco before SVB’s collapse in 2023. Early life and education Becker grew up on his family's farm in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His father ran a business supply company. He received a bachelor's degree in finance from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Career Becker's first job out of college was at a Comerica branch in Detroit. On Friday, March 10, 2023, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) failed after a bank run, marking the second-largest bank failure in United States history and the largest since the 2007–2008 financial crisis. It was one of three March 2023 United States bank failures. Seeking higher investment returns from its burgeoning deposits, SVB had dramatically increased its holdings of long-term securities over 2021, accounting for them on a hold-to-maturity basis. The market value of these bonds decreased significantly through 2022 and into 2023 as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to curb an inflation surge, causing unrealized losses on the portfolio.
