Post-rock
Post-rock is a form of experimental rock characterized by a focus on exploring textures and timbre over traditional rock song structures, chords, or riffs. Post-rock artists are often instrumental, typically combining rock instrumentation with electronics. The genre emerged within the indie and underground music scene of the 1980s and early 1990s. However, due to its abandonment of rock conventions, it often bears little resemblance musically to contemporary indie rock, borrowing instead from diverse sources including ambient, electronica, jazz, krautrock, dub, and minimalist classical. Artists such as Talk Talk and Slint have been credited with producing foundational works in the style in the early 1990s. The term post-rock itself was notably employed by journalist Simon Reynolds in a review of the 1994 Bark Psychosis album '' Hex''. It later solidified into a recognizable trend with the release of Tortoise's 1996 album ''Millions Now Living Will Never Die''. The term has ... Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun
''Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun'' is the second studio album by post-rock band Red Sparowes, released in September 2006. Despite having no lyrics, the album (by way of its song titles) follows the story of the Great Leap Forward in Mao Zedong-era China, more specifically recounting the Great Sparrow Campaign, a mass killing of sparrows (along with rats, flies and mosquitoes) that fed on a portion of the harvest and were seen as pests. Peasants were encouraged to bang pots and pans to scare sparrows into continuing flight, eventually killing them from exhaustion. Whilst the harvest of the year after the campaign was larger, there was a massive rise in locust numbers in the late 1950s, as a result of the significantly lower population of sparrows, a major predator of the locust. Along with other programs in the Great Leap Forward, the Great Sparrow Campaign caused widespread famine where, between 1959 and 1962, 45 million people died of starvation or were beaten to deat ... Gregor Samsa (band)
Gregor Samsa is an American band from Virginia, United States, formed in 2000 and fronted by Champ Bennett. It takes its name from the main character of Franz Kafka's novella ''The Metamorphosis''. The band's sound, although rooted in the post-rock genre, differs from that of other bands in the genre in that it employs dual vocals by Bennett and Nikki King, a feature which relates them to the shoegazing and slowcore genres. Gregor Samsa has stated on its website that "the early history of the group has been lost in a wash of noise, strange beeps, and outright lies”. Reviews of their album compared it to acts such as Brian Eno, Sigur Rós, Múm, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Low. In support of its latest release, the band played twenty-one eastern US venues in March before then venturing a 23-date tour of the United Kingdom, France, Luxembourg, and Germany during April. Panopticon (album)
''Panopticon'' is the third full-length album by Los Angeles, California based post-metal band ISIS, released by Ipecac Recordings in 2004. The album's title is derived from philosopher Jeremy Bentham's panopticon prison ideal and philosopher/historian Michel Foucault's later allegorical appropriation of the concept. The liner notes also include quotes from technology writer Howard Rheingold and futurist Alex Steffen; as a concept album, ''Panopticons focus is on the proliferation of surveillance technologies throughout modern society and the government's role in that spread. Critical response to ''Panopticon'' was generally very warm; as it followed 2002's critically acclaimed ''Oceanic'', many reviewers were quick to hold the two in comparison. The consensus was that ''Panopticon'' represented a progression, of sorts. The album's sound continued ISIS' departure from the strictures of sludge and metal – which had been the hallmarks of their earlier material – and continue ... At The Soundless Dawn
''At the Soundless Dawn'' is Red Sparowes' 2005 debut release. It had a mixed reception upon release, enthusiastically welcomed by fans of the genre and of related bands such as Isis and Neurosis. Belgian record label Hypertension Records released it on double LP. The album includes no vocals, instead focusing on extended instrumentation evolving slowly, usually into a crescendo. This would make the album best described as post rock. Throughout the album, the motifs of urban decay and human extinction are expressed via samples, and the poetic nature of the song titles. Theme According to the band, "There is an underlying theme to this record. The literature on the subject is almost limitless, but it basically breaks down to this: There have previously been five “mass extinction events” on earth that have been scientifically realized, dating back from 440 million years ago. These events have resulted in the extinction of 19% - 54% of all species on earth at each specific t ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

The Cure
The Cure are an English Rock music, rock band formed in 1978 in Crawley, Crawley, West Sussex. Throughout numerous lineup changes since the band's formation, guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter Robert Smith (musician), Robert Smith has remained the only constant member. The band's debut album, ''Three Imaginary Boys'' (1979), along with several early singles, placed the band in the post-punk and New wave music, new wave movements that had sprung up in the United Kingdom. Beginning with their second album, ''Seventeen Seconds'' (1980), the band adopted a new, increasingly dark and tormented style, which, together with Smith's stage look, had a strong influence on the emerging genre of gothic rock as well as gothic subculture, the subculture that eventually formed around the genre. After the release of the band's fourth album, ''Pornography (album), Pornography'' (1982), Smith introduced a greater Pop music, pop sensibility into the band's music, and they subsequently garner ...
