Greenwich Admirals
Greenwich Admirals is a rugby league team based in Greenwich, London. They play in the South Premier of the Rugby League Conference. History The ''Greenwich Admirals'' side was founded in 2001 as the brainchild of Chief Executive of the London Broncos' Lionel Hurst and under the guidance of development officer Graeme Thompson. Greenwich Admirals were to continue the Broncos' development work in the area after the Broncos moved away from south east London to a new home in Brentford. An introductory game was played on 11 August 2001 against South London Storm, the Admirals team being made up of rugby union players from Old Brockleians RFC and Greenwich RFC and players borrowed from Storm; Greenwich won 28 - 24. Jason Henley was recruited as Head Coach and in February 2002, the club was formally set up with a committee, constitution and club rules. West London Sharks
West London Sharks RLFC was a rugby league team based in Chiswick, London. West London Sharks are now playing at Chiswick RFU, Dukes Meadow, in Chiswick under the name of South West London Chargers. They compete in the South Premier Division of the Rugby League Conference. The club runs an additional social side in the London League competition and a women's team playing in the Women's South competition. West London Sharks merged with South London Storm to form South West London Chargers in 2013. South London Storm Academy
The South London Storm Academy is the youth team set-up for South London Storm rugby league club. It is for players aged 16 to 18 and was established in May 2008 in association with the Jack Petchey Foundation. History The ''South London Storm Rugby League Academy'' was launched in May 2008 with the support of a £10,000 grant from the Jack Petchey Foundation. The initial three-year plan will see Storm working with a number of local 6th forms and colleges including St Joseph's College in Upper Norwood, Carshalton Boys Sports College and Croydon College. The idea a behind the academy is that the inductees will gain much more than just playing rugby league. The backing of the Jack Petchey Foundation has enabled the club to introduce a programme that can help prepare the participants for a career in sport and in which they will learn about how to look after themselves through living a healthier lifestyle. Elmbridge Eagles
Elmbridge Eagles RL are a rugby league club from Elmbridge in Surrey. They were one of the founding members of the Rugby League Conference as Kingston. History In 1978, schoolboys at Ambleside Middle School in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey were introduced to the game by a teacher. The boys really took to it and began to play matches against other schools in 1979. An early claim to fame came in September 1980 when the boys were invited to take part in a curtain raiser at Craven Cottage when Fulham RLFC took on Wigan in their first ever fixture. They also became the first school team from the South of England to win a game in Yorkshire. Graham Belbin, long serving coach at Elmbridge was involved in that first curtain raiser game for Ambleside. However, when the boys transferred to the local senior school, the PE teacher there wouldn't allow them to play. Kent Ravens
The Kent Ravens are a defunct amateur rugby league club from Eltham in south-east London, founded in 2004 by Alan Bacon. They played at Princes Park. The club won 10 titles in the two seasons since its creation on 12 June 2004, including the women's London league runners up, the under-11s overall London championship and the men's London League Plate grand final. The Early History of Rugby League in Kent The first rugby league club in Kent was a professional outfit, called Kent Invicta. Invicta were formed by Paul Faires and were admitted to the Rugby League on 6 April 1983. Southend United Football Club then approached Invicta and in late 1984 became Southend Invicta but they were struck from the 1985–86 fixtures by the Rugby League only days before the commencement of the new season because they were considered not to have formed a team. Trevor Leota
Trevor Leota (born 8 February 1975) is a New Zealand-born former rugby union player for Samoa. He currently coaches at the Footscray Bulldogs in Melbourne, Australia. Leota was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and won 30 caps for Samoa. Career He is a hooker and has been widely recognised as one of the hardest tacklers in the game. He made his debut for Western Samoa in 1995 during a tour of the UK. He caught Nigel Melville's eye and was signed by Wasps in 1997, where he quickly became something of a cult figure for his uncompromising approach on the field, his colourful hair styles and his friendly nature off the pitch. Whilst at Wasps he helped them win the Anglo-Welsh Cup in 1999 and 2000; scoring a try in the latter final. London League (rugby League)
The London and South East Merit League is a rugby league competition founded in 1965. It is also known as the ''London League'' (LL), ''London, South and East Merit League'', ''London Amateur Rugby League'' (LARL) and ''London Merit League'' (LML). It is now one of four feeder leagues for the Rugby League Conference (RLC). There is also a London Junior League for youth teams. Structure The merit system, which gives its unofficial name to the league as the London Merit League, came about as a way to accommodate the needs of as many of clubs as possible. The "merit table" system gives teams, freedom to arrange as many or few games amongst the other league participants as they wish. The results of fixtures worked out between the teams are compiled into a league table based on average scores. The top six teams then go through to a play-off system to determine the champion club.
