Invercargill ( , mi, Waihōpai is the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand, and one of the southernmost cities in the world. It is the commercial centre of the Southland region. The city lies in the heart of the wide expanse of the Southland Plains to the east of the Ōreti or New River some north of Bluff, which is the southernmost town in the South Island. It sits amid rich farmland that is bordered by large areas of conservation land and marine reserves, including Fiordland National Park covering the south-west corner of the South Island and the Catlins coastal region. Many streets in the city, especially in the centre and main shopping district, are named after rivers in Scotland. These include the main streets Dee and Tay, as well as those named after the Tweed, Forth, Tyne, Esk, Don, Ness, Yarrow, Spey, Eye and Ythan rivers, amongst others. Woodend, Southland
Woodend is a rural suburb of the New Zealand city of Invercargill. Demographics Woodend covers and is part of the Woodend-Greenhills statistical area. It had a population of 174 at the 2018 New Zealand census, an increase of 12 people (7.4%) since the 2013 census, and an increase of 3 people (1.8%) since the 2006 census. There were 69 households. There were 90 males and 81 females, giving a sex ratio of 1.11 males per female. The median age was 40.9 years (compared with 37.4 years nationally), with 39 people (22.4%) aged under 15 years, 21 (12.1%) aged 15 to 29, 87 (50.0%) aged 30 to 64, and 24 (13.8%) aged 65 or older. Ethnicities were 93.1% European/Pākehā, 12.1% Māori, 1.7% Asian, and 1.7% other ethnicities (totals add to more than 100% since people could identify with multiple ethnicities).
