Alfred George Greenhill
Sir Alfred George Greenhill, FRS FRAeS (29 November 1847 in London – 10 February 1927 in London), was a British mathematician. George Greenhill was educated at Christ's Hospital School and from there he went to St John's College, Cambridge in 1866. In 1876, Greenhill was appointed professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy (RMA) at Woolwich, London, UK. He held this chair until his retirement in 1908. His 1892 textbook on applications of elliptic functions is of acknowledged excellence. He was one of the world's leading experts on applications of elliptic integrals in electromagnetic theory. He was a Plenary Speaker of the ICM in 1904 at Heidelberg (where he also gave a section talk) and an Invited Speaker of the ICM in 1908 at Rome, in 1920 at Strasbourg, and in 1924 at Toronto. Thomas Greenhill (1611/12 – 4 January 1658) was an English colonial administrator, one of the early pioneers of the East India Company and the Agent of Madras for two terms from 1648 to 1652 and 1655 to 1658. Early life Greenhill arrived in India in 1632 to serve in the company's Masulipatnam factory. During the agency of Thomas Ivie, Greenhill was sent on a mission to the Raja of Chandragiri which resulted in the issue of a new grant in October/November 1645. By this grant, the Raja confirmed an older grant and ceded the village of Narikamedu to the company. Sir Robert Greenhill-Russell, 1st Baronet (1763 – 12 December 1836), born Robert Greenhill, was a British politician. He was born in 1763 to the Rev. John Russell Greenhill and Elizabeth Noble. He was the grandson of Elizabeth Russell, who belonged to the Russell of Chequers Court family and were descended from Oliver Cromwell. Robert changed his last name to Greenhill-Russell upon inheriting Chequers from his father in 1815. He was granted the title Baronet Greenhill-Russell of Chequers Court. He served as Member of Parliament for Thirsk between 1806 and 1832. Joseph Greenhill (1704–1788) was an English theological writer. Life Greenhill was a nephew of Thomas Greenhill. His father, William (one of a family of thirty-nine children by the same father and mother), was a counsellor-at-law, who lived first in London and then retired to a family estate at Abbot's Langley, Hertfordshire, where Joseph was born and baptised in February 1703–4. He was educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, graduated B.A. in 1726, and was admitted M.A. in 1731. Greenhill was appointed rector of East Horsley in 1727, and of East Clandon East Clandon is a village and civil parish in Surrey, England on the A246 between the towns of Guildford to the west and Leatherhead to the east. Rev. John Russell Greenhill (baptised 11 December 1727 – 20 December 1813) was an English cleric, known as the owner of Chequers, Buckinghamshire. Life He was the son of Samuel Greenhill (died 1749) of Swyncombe, Oxfordshire of the East India Company and Elizabeth Russell, daughter of John Russell. His mother belonged to the Russell of Chequers Court family and was descended from Oliver Cromwell. He was baptised in Calcutta in December 1727, only three months after his parents' marriage. His mother died a year later. John Greenhill (c. 1644 – 19 May 1676) was an English portrait painter, a pupil of Peter Lely, who approached his teacher in artistic excellence, but whose life was cut short by a dissolute lifestyle. Life and work Greenhill was born at Salisbury, Wiltshire around 1644, the eldest son of John Greenhill, registrar of the diocese of Salisbury, and Penelope Champneys, daughter of Richard Champneys of Orchardleigh, Somerset. His father was connected through his brothers with the East India trade. John's younger brother Henry became Governor of the Gold Coast and a commissioner of the Navy. Greenhill was educated at Salisbury Cathedral School. Basil Greenhill
Dr. Basil Jack Greenhill CMG (26 February 1920, in Bristol – 8 April 2003), was a diplomat, museum director and historian. He went to Bristol Grammar School, before reading philosophy, politics and economics at Bristol University, but his time there was interrupted by wartime naval service. In the navy, he rose from rating to lieutenant, working at the radar research establishment at Malvern, and testing radar on bombers. He emerged in 1946 as a lieutenant, and on the completion of his degree he joined what became the Commonwealth Relations Office, where he stayed until 1966. He was appointed CMG on his retirement in the 1967 New Year Honours. In 1967 he became the Director of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England, until 1983.
