Green County Schools is a PK– 12 graded school district serving Greene County, North Carolina. Its six schools serve 3,348 students as of the 2010–11 school year. History African Americans often made up the majority of the student population in the county schools. In 1959, Black students accounted for 54% of the system's enrollment. That year, after a bond referendum was passed the previous year to build a new White-only school in the county, a boycott was begun of the school system on February 10. The next day, 34 of the bus drivers refused to run their routes. The strike lasted four days and affected approximately 2800 black students in the county. It was resolved after parents were able to meet with school board members and work to move up the date for voting on a bond referendum for improvements to the county's Black high school. Greene County, North Carolina
Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,451. Its county seat is Snow Hill. History Greene County, being a part of land grant by King Charles II of England in 1663, was first settled around 1710 by immigrants from Maryland, Virginia, and parts of North Carolina. The original inhabitants of the area, the Tuscarora Indians, fought with these immigrants and on March 20–23, 1713, a fighting force of South Carolinians and Yamasee Indians, under Colonel Murice Moore, defeated the Tuscarora, under the leadership of Chief Hancock. This was the final major battle of the Tuscarora War at Fort Neoheroka near current day Snow Hill. In 1758, the area now recognized as Greene and Lenoir Counties was separated from Johnston and named Dobbs for the Royal Governor. Kinston is a city in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States, with a population of 21,677 as of the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Lenoir County since its formation in 1791. Rosenwald School
The Rosenwald School project built more than 5,000 schools, shops, and teacher homes in the United States primarily for the education of African-American children in the South during the early 20th century. The project was the product of the partnership of Julius Rosenwald, a Jewish-American clothier who became part-owner and president of Sears, Roebuck and Company and the African-American leader, educator, and philanthropist Booker T. Washington, who was president of the Tuskegee Institute. The need arose from the chronic underfunding of public education for African-American children in the South, as black people had been discriminated against at the turn of the century and excluded from the political system in that region. Snow Hill Colored High School
Snow Hill Colored High School, also known as Greene County Colored Training School and Rosenwald Center for Cultural Enrichment, is a historic Rosenwald School building located at Snow Hill, Greene County, North Carolina. It was built in 1925, and is a one-story, seven-bay, H-shaped brick building. A six classroom addition was built about 1935. Also on the property are the contributing Mary M. Battle Monument (c. 1925) and baseball field (c. 1935, c. 1950). The Snow Hill Colored High School is one of five schools that were constructed using Rosenwald funds in Greene County, including the Zachariah School. Snow Hill is a town in Greene County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census.
