Greene Community School District
Greene Community School District was a school district headquartered in Greene, Iowa, USA. The district served sections of Butler and Floyd counties. It began whole grade-sharing with the Allison–Bristow Community School District in 2004, leading to the creation of North Butler High School in Greene and North Butler Middle School in Allison. Leaderships of the two districts promoted a merger that would occur by 2006 as they hoped to obtain property tax incentives and weighted enrollment funds totaling $600,000. This election was scheduled for Tuesday, October 11, 2005. The proposed merger failed as Aliston–Bristow voters defeated it on a 279–206 basis, with 57.53% rejecting the proposed merger. The Greene voters had approved it on a 352–62 basis (85.02%). The second vote on whether the districts would merge succeeded in 2010, with Greene voters approving it by 607–25 (96%) and Allison–Bristow voters approving it by 378–311 (54.86%). Greene, Iowa
Greene is a city in Butler County, Iowa, United States, along the Shell Rock River, and along Butler County's northern border, where Butler and Floyd counties meet. The population was 990 at the time of the 2020 census. History The community of Greene was first a postal area called, "Elm Springs" that was established in 1855 three miles southwest of the current town on Coldwater Creek. In 1871, the railroad selected a site on the east side of the Shell Rock River for a train depot and roundhouse, drawing the Elm Springs Post Office and community to that site. In 1871, the postal area name was changed from Elm Springs to Greene in honor of Judge George Greene president of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Minnesota railroad who, along with J. W. Butler County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,334. Its county seat is Allison. The county was organized in 1854 and named for General William O. Butler. History Butler County was formed on January 15, 1851, from open land. It was named after Kentucky native William Orlando Butler, a general and hero of the Mexican–American War, who ran as Vice President of the United States in 1848. Until 1854, the county was governed by other counties. Only at this time did it have enough inhabitants to establish its own local government. The first court proceedings were conducted in a small log cabin of a settler. In 1858, the first courthouse was completed in Clarksville. History Floyd County was established in 1854 and was named for Sergeant Charles Floyd of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who died in 1804 near what is now Sioux City, Iowa, and who was the only member to die on the Expedition. North Butler High School
North Butler High School is a rural public high school in Greene, Iowa, United States. It is a part of the North Butler Community School District; it was operated by the Greene Community School District until 2011, when that district merged into the North Butler district. It was a merger of Greene High School and Allison–Bristow High School, and it began operations in 2004 after the Greene and Allison–Bristow school districts began a grade-sharing agreement. Circa 2004 its expected enrollment was about 800.
