Green Hill Cemetery (Amsterdam, New York)
Green Hill Cemetery is a historic rural cemetery located at Amsterdam in Montgomery County, New York. It was established in 1858. Unitarian Minister Amory Dwight Mayo delivered the dedication address, which explained the role that cemeteries played in creating a "Christian Republic." It encompasses 14,860 individual interments marked by imposing mausolea, elaborate monuments, family plots, decorative markers, and simple stones. It includes four contributing structures: Church Street entrance gate, upper pedestrian gate and path, receiving vault, and Sanford mausoleum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Green Hill Cemetery (Waynesville, North Carolina)
Green Hill Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Waynesville, North Carolina, where the town's first doctors, lawyers, politicians, preachers, and business people are buried. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery is owned and operated by the Town of Waynesville. Colonel James Robert Love, who donated the land and founded Waynesville and is a hero of the American Revolutionary War, is buried on the highest hill in the cemetery. The white chief of the Cherokee people, William Holland Thomas, is buried there. He was also the founder of Thomas' Legion, a group of local mountaineers and Cherokee who fought during the American Civil War in Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Green Hill Cemetery is located in Greensboro, North Carolina and it on 51 acres of rolling land. Opened in 1877, it is Greensboro's oldest publicly operated cemetery. Green Hill Cemetery Historic District is a national historic district located at Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia. The site encompasses two contributing buildings, one contributing site, and 22 contributing objects. The rural cemetery was designed in 1854 by David Hunter Strother modeled on a French cemetery. It includes a Neoclassical Revival style mausoleum (1917–1918) and a Shingle Style caretaker's lodge (1901). The cemetery includes a number of notable monuments, as well as the graves of Strother and his family. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Green Hill Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery located near Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, Turkey. History Green Hill and Chocolate Hill were names given by Allied troops taking part in the landing at Suvla Bay The landing at Suvla Bay was an amphibious landing made at Suvla on the Aegean coast of the Gallipoli peninsula in the Ottoman Empire as part of the August Offensive, the final British attempt to break the deadlock of the Battle of Gallipol ... in August 1915 to parts of a hill called in Turkish Yilghin Burnu and which rises 52 metres above sea level from the eastern shore of the salt lake. The hill was captured the day after the landing, on 7 August 1915, but remained on the front line until the Allied withdrawal from the area in late December. The cemetery was built on the hill after the Armistice when graves from the battlefield and small burial grounds nearby were consolidated into it.
