Adolphus Greely
Adolphus Washington Greely (March 27, 1844 – October 20, 1935) was a United States Army officer and polar explorer. He attained the rank of Major general (United States), major general and was a recipient of the Medal of Honor. A native of Newburyport, Massachusetts and an 1860 graduate of Brown High School (now Newburyport High School), in 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army for the American Civil War. He received his commission as a Second lieutenant (United States), second lieutenant in 1863 and was promoted to First lieutenant (United States), first lieutenant in 1864 and Captain (United States O-3), captain in 1865. At the end of the war he received a Brevet (rank), brevet promotion to Major (United States), major in recognition of his wartime accomplishments. After the war, Greely accepted a second lieutenant's commission in the regular army. Aurora Borealis Greely (1905 – 1983) was an African American dancer and choreographer from the 1920s through the 1940s. Biography Greely was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1905. In 1922 she was a student at Wadleigh High School for Girls and was performing in Irvin C. Miller's play "Liza" which was on Broadway. She started in the chorus, and then moved into leading roles. In 1929 she opened a dancing school in Los Angeles, and in 1932, she took a break from dancing because she suffered from "rheumatic leg". Greely returned to dancing an in 1935 she was described as a "popular dance team" when she danced with Leroy Broomfield. In 1933, she and Broomfield danced before King Gustaf V of Sweden while in Shanghai. Penny Ricker Greely (born March 10, 1971, in Green Bay, Wisconsin) is a three time Paralympian for Team USA. She competes as a wheelchair curler and competed as a sitting volleyball player. She played in the bronze medal-winning United States team in Volleyball at the 2004 Summer Paralympics and competed in Wheelchair curling at the 2014 Winter Paralympics and the 2018 Winter Paralympics. Athletic career Greely began her Paralympic career as a sitting volleyball player in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece, where she earned a bronze medal. She competed in the 2003 Parapan American Games to qualify for the 2004 Paralympic Team. She has since retired from sitting volleyball. Greely began wheelchair curling in July 2010. Rose Greely
Rose Ishbel Greely (1887–May 23, 1969) was an American landscape architect and the first female licensed architect in Washington, D.C. Early life and education Rose Isabel Greely was born in Washington, D.C. in 1887. She was the daughter of Arctic explorer, Adolphus Greely and Henrietta H.C. Nesmith. Greely studied fine art at a number of different organizations, including Maryland Agricultural College, the Art Institute of Chicago, where she studied interior design, and metal work while in Washington. In Florence, Italy, she studied silver repoussé and metal enameling before deciding to study landscape architecture. She returned to the United States to attend Smith College, studying under Henry Atherton Frost and graduating around 1920 and trained as both architect and landscape architect at the Cambridge School of Domestic and Landscape Architecture for Women, graduating in 1919. Greely, Ontario
Greely is a suburban-rural community in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Located south of the city in Osgoode Ward, it was part of the Township of Osgoode prior to amalgamation in 2001. Greely is currently the largest rural village in terms of land area and the third largest in terms of population in the City of Ottawa. According to the Greely Community Association, it is bounded on the east by Sale Barn Road and Greyscreek Road, on the north by Mitch Owens on the west by Manotick Station Road, and on the south by Snake Island Road. According to the Canada 2011 Census, the population within these boundaries was 9,049. It falls within the borders of federal parliamentary riding of Carleton. Fort Greely
Fort Greely is a United States Army launch site for anti-ballistic missiles located about southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. It is also the home of the Cold Regions Test Center (CRTC), as Fort Greely is one of the coldest areas in Alaska, and can accommodate cold, extreme-cold, and temperate-weather tests depending on the season.
