The Greek B Basket League, or Greek B Basketball League (Greek: Ελληνική Β Μπασκετ Λιγκ), is a national basketball league in Greece. It is also known as the Second National Championship, B National Championship, Second National League, B National League, Third Division, and in Greek, (Βήτα Εθνική καλαθοσφαίρισης) (Beta Ethniki Basketball). It is organized by the Hellenic Basketball Federation (E.O.K.). It is the 3rd-tier level of the basketball league system in Greece, and was founded in its current form in 1986. Originally, the league began in 1961, as the ''Greek National B Class Championship'', and it was the 2nd-tier level of Greek basketball until 1986, when it was replaced in that capacity by the Greek A2 Basket League. The Greek A2 Basket League ( el, Ελληνική Α2 Μπάσκετ Λιγκ, link=no), is a professional basketball league in Greece. It is the 2nd-tier level of pro competition, among clubs in the country. It is organized by the Hellenic Basketball Federation (E.O.K.). History In the 1986–87 season, the current format for Greek professional basketball, consisting of the A1 National Category and the A2 National Category was formed. Panionios G.S.S. Football Club (Greek: ΠΑΕ Πανιώνιος Γ.Σ.Σ.), the ''Pan-Ionian Gymnastics Club of Smyrna'' (Πανιώνιος Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Σμύρνης, ''Panionios Gymnastikos Syllogos Smyrnis''), more commonly known as Panionios F.C. or simply Panionios, is a Greek amateur football club based in Nea Smyrni, Athens, Greece. Part of Panionios G.S.S. (founded in 1890 in Smyrna, Ottoman Empire), Panionios F.C. is the oldest Greek football club. In the wake of the Greco-Turkish War (1919–22) and the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the multi-sport club Panionios G.S.S. was transferred to Athens. Sporting Clube de Portugal B is the reserve team of Portuguese football club Sporting CP, a team based in Lisbon. Reserve teams in Portugal play in the same league system as the senior team, rather than in a reserve team league. However, they cannot play in the same division as their senior team, so Sporting B is ineligible for promotion to the Primeira Liga and could not play in the Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga. Peristeri (Greek: Περιστέρι, meaning "pigeon/dove" in Greek) is a suburban municipality in the western part of the Athens agglomeration, Greece. Vizantinos Athlitikos Omilos ("Byzantine Athletic Club") or VAO is a multi-sport club in the city of Thessaloniki. It was founded in 1926. Esperos Kallitheas B.C. is the men's basketball section of the Greek multi-sports club of Esperos Kallitheas (full name: POK Esperos/Panathlitikos Omilos Kallitheas Esperos). The basketball club was founded in 1945, two years after the establishment of the parent athletic club.
