Greek Archaeological Service
The Greek Archaeological Service ( el, Αρχαιολογική Υπηρεσία) is a state service, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture, responsible for the oversight of all archaeological excavations, museums and the country's archaeological heritage in general. Archaeological Society Of Athens
The Archaeological Society of Athens (Greek: Εν Αθήναις Αρχαιολογική Εταιρεία) is an independent learned society. Also termed the Greek Archaeological Society, it was founded in 1837 by Konstantinos Bellios, just a few years after the establishment of the modern Greek State, with the aim of encouraging archaeological excavations, maintenance, care and exhibition of antiquities in Greece. The Archaeological Society of Athens work in excavation and funding of archaeological endeavours are extensive. For example, the society helped discover new epigraphical evidence associated with the sanctuary of the goddess Demeter within Eleusis. In addition to this, they provided plans of the prehistoric settlement of Thorikos to help uncover ancient ceramic material. Semni Karouzou
Semni Papaspyridi-Karouzou (; 1897 8 December 1994) was a Greek Classical archaeology, classical archaeologist who specialized in the study of pottery from ancient Greece. She was the first woman to join the Greek Archaeological Service; she excavated in Crete, Euboea, Thessaly, and the Argolis, Argolid, and worked as Curator of ceramic collections at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, National Archaeological Museum in Athens for over thirty years. She experienced political persecution under the Greek junta, Greek military junta of 1967-1974. Venetia Kotta
Venetia Kotta (; 1897 or 1901 – 1945) was an archaeologist, museum curator, and Byzantine historian from Sampsunta in the former Ottoman Empire. Biography and historical background Venetia Kotta was born in 1897 or 1901 in Sampsunta, then part of the Ottoman Empire. Her parents belonged to the Pontus region's Greek-speaking minority. Kotta completed her high school education in Russia. Later, she ran a girls' school for Romanian Greeks in Bucharest. During the 1920s, she went to universities in Athens and Paris. She studied the Byzantines under Gabriel Millet and earned a PhD while attending school in Paris. In 1933, Kotta applied for a job at the University of Thessaloniki, aiming to teach a course about the people's public and private lives in Byzantine times. Her application was rejected, possibly on the basis of her gender. In the 1930s, Kotta became involved with Greece's archaeological community. Central Archaeological Council
The Central Archaeological Council and Museums Council ( el, Κεντρικό Αρχαιολογικό Συμβούλιο και Συμβούλιο Μουσείων), commonly known simply by its older abbreviation KAS (Κ.Α.Σ.), is the supreme advisory body for all matters pertaining to the "protection of antiquities and cultural patrimony in general" in Greece. Its present form and functions are regulated by Law 3028/2002, but its origins date back to 1834, when the Central Committee (Κεντρική Ἐπιτροπὴ) of the Greek Archaeological Service was established. Ephorate Of Underwater Antiquities
The Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities ( el, Εφορεία Εναλίων Αρχαιοτήτων) is a department within the Greek Ministry of Culture responsible for underwater archaeology. The Ephorate was founded in 1976, and has jurisdiction over the entirety of Greece (unlike the regional antiquities ephorates). Permission from the EUA is needed to conduct surveys and photography dives on architectural structures, such as shipwrecks, in Greek waters. The EUA itself is also responsible for the discovery, exploration, and maintenance of underwater activities. The Ephorate operates two regional offices, based in Thessaloniki and Heraklion. In 2003, the Ephorate was given jurisdiction over all wrecks of ships and aircraft more than fifty years old.
