Greatest Hits (Cardiacs Album)
''Greatest Hits'' (or ''Cardiacs Greatest Hits'') is a compilation album by the English rock band Cardiacs, released on 22 February 2002. The album is amusingly titled as it lacks many better-known songs including their biggest hit "Is This the Life". ''Greatest Hits'' features one new and otherwise unavailable track, called "Faster Than Snakes With a Ball and a Chain". This is described as having been taken from the then-forthcoming and as-yet untitled album that was to follow ''Greatest Hits'', the creation of which has evidently been abandoned by the band (not to be mistaken for ''LSD'', a later album left in a similar incomplete state.) Release On 22 February 2002, the Alphabet Business Concern released ''Greatest Hits'' through CD, distributed by Plastic Head Distribution (PHD). Cardiacs
Cardiacs are an English rock band formed in Kingston upon Thames by Tim Smith (lead guitar and vocals) and his brother Jim (bass, backing vocals) in 1977 under the name Cardiac Arrest. The band's sound fused circus, baroque pop and medieval music with progressive rock and post-punk, adding other elements like nursery rhymes and sea shanties. Tim Smith was the primary lyricist, noted for his complex and innovative compositional style. He and his brother were the only constant members in the band's regularly changing List of Cardiacs band members#Lineups, lineup. Jon Poole
Jonathan Charles Poole (born 16 October 1969), also known by his stage name Random Jon Poole, is an English multi-instrumentalist singer and songwriter. He is best known for his work as guitarist for Cardiacs and as bass player for the Wildhearts and Lifesigns. Poole is the frontman and main performer of God Damn Whores, and has also worked with the bands Ablemesh, Dr Brighton and Celebricide. He is currently the live bass player for the Lotus Eaters and has joined the Brighton band La Momo as drummer. He also fronts the Dowling Poole along with Willie Dowling, and has released three albums and a number of EPs with this project. Mark Cawthra
Mark Cawthra is an English musician and record producer working in the UK. He was born in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England. Biography Cawthra's first serious musical activity was in an early (unnamed) music project with schoolfriend Tim Smith (bass guitar) and David Philpot (keyboards), a band in which he was the drummer. The music, a mix of jazz and rock, drew inspiration from the "Canterbury" bands, particularly Egg. After a period of playing drums with other musicians around Kingston upon Thames, he moved to North Yorkshire and lived there for the whole of 1978. He returned to London in 1979, following an invitation to join Tim and Jim Smith in Cardiac Arrest (replacing Peter Tagg on drums). Other members of the band at this time were Colvin Mayers (keyboards), (later to play with Adrian Borland in The Sound), and Mick Pugh (vocals). Christian Hayes
Christian David "Bic" Hayes (born 10 June 1964) is an English rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. Best known as the frontman of Dark Star and guitarist with Levitation, he has also released solo material as Mikrokosmos, which was produced by Tim Smith. Hayes explained that he was nicknamed Bic because he "just stopped eating for ages and people started saying I looked like a Bic biro. I had this phase when I thought eating was boring". Career Christian David Hayes was born on 10 June 1964 in London. Hayes formed the live thrash band Panixphere (also written as ''Panixsphere'') in 1982 with "Flat Hat" and future Cardiacs roadie Dominic "Little Hicky" Parker, which was initially active until 1984. Tim Quy
Timothy Graham Quy ( ; 14 August 19612 February 2023) was a British musician, best known as the percussionist for the rock band Cardiacs from 1981 to 1990. Initially the band's sound engineer, Quy first gigged as reserve bass player in 1980 and joined full time on percussion in 1981. He became a key part of the band's classic six-piece lineup, performing on all their releases from '' The Seaside'' (1983) to '' On Land and in the Sea'' (1989), and was a popular face in the UK underground. Quy's last performance with Cardiacs was documented in the live video ''All That Glitters Is a Mares Nest'' (1992), where his marimba figures particularly high in the mix. From 2020, several crowdfunding campaigns were created to help Quy through a series of health problems. Jim Smith (bassist)
James A. Smith (born 14 April 1958) is an English musician, best known as the bass guitarist for the rock band Cardiacs which he formed with his brother Tim Smith. Along with performing backing vocals for the group, he co-wrote the hymn "The Alphabet Business Concern (Home of Fadeless Splendour)", sang lead vocals on "Food on the Wall" live, and his girlfriend ran the band's merch stall. Smith grew up in Chessington, Surrey, purchasing a bass in 1972. He co-founded the band that would become Cardiacs, Cardiac Arrest, in 1977 on bass and backing vocals, though he allegedly couldn't play an instrument. Co-writing the lyrics on the cassette album ''Toy World'' (1981), Smith played on every Cardiacs release and, along with Tim, was the only constant member in the band's regularly changing lineup. Songs For Ships And Irons
''Songs for Ships and Irons'' is a 1991 collection of non-album singles and B-sides by Cardiacs. It combines the whole of the '' Big Ship'' extended play, the whole of the "There's Too Many Irons In The Fire" 12-inch single and the B-sides of the "Susannah's Still Alive" 12-inch single. It also includes a bonus song called "Everything is Easy," a longstanding live favorite not previously released as a studio recording. Some of the quiet talking in between tracks from the original '' Big Ship'' mini-album differs from the original release in having been edited/lowered in volume. ''A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window'' is the debut studio album proper by the English rock band Cardiacs. Released on 21 March 1988, its single "Is This the Life" saw brief chart success due to exposure on mainstream radio, and garnered the attention of a wider audience when it entered the Independent Top 10 in the UK, peaking at number 80. Its reputation was very mixed due to its progressive nature, complex sound, and for being artistically abstract with its lyrics and themes. ''Heaven Born and Ever Bright'' is the third studio album by British rock band Cardiacs. It was produced by Tim Smith, engineered by David Murder and mixed by both. Due to Rough Trade going bankrupt soon after the album's release, it was scarce until reissued in 1995 by the Alphabet Business Concern. This reissue was remastered and given new cover art. Lineup changes ''Heaven Born and Ever Bright'' was the first Cardiacs album since the departure of almost half the group. Percussionist Tim Quy left Cardiacs in 1990, and did not work with them again. Saxophonist Sarah Smith and keyboardist William D.
