Greater Somalia League
The Greater Somalia League (GSL) was a political party in Somalia that advocated for the establishment of a Greater Somalia. History The GSL was led by Haaji Mahammad Husseen. It was formed by dissidents of the Somali Youth League (SYL). The party was fiercely nationalist and called for the unification of all Somali areas into one state. It charged the Somali Youth League with not wanting the unification of Somalia. Haaji Mahammad Husseen and a group of his followers were arrested after violent protests and put to trial. The GSL boycotted the 1958 municipal election, charging harassment from the SYL. It also boycotted the later 1959 elections. In 1958, Halima Godane was elected to Mogadishu's city council, representing the party. Greater Somalia ( so, Soomaaliweyn, ar, الصومال الكبرى ''As-Sūmal al-Kubra'') is a concept to unite all ethnic Somalis comprising the regions in or near the Horn of Africa in which ethnic Somalis live and have historically inhabited. Halima Godane
Halima Mohamed Yusuf, better known as Halima Godane ("the stooped one") (1935–1994) was a Somali poet and activist. Biography Born in Kismayo, Godane was married at age nine to Bulqaas of Ali Seleebaan. She moved to Mogadishu in the later 1940s, joining the Somali Youth League; in the early 1950s, she was elected a member of the party's women's committee. On national occasions she would recite '' buraanbur'' poetry, entertaining crowds at the regular party meetings as well. On October 12, 1954, she first recited what would become her best-known work, an ode to the flag of Somalia. In 1958, she was among those who supported Haaji Mahammad Husseen in his desire to form the Greater Somalia League; that same year, she was elected to Mogadishu's city council. Republican Union (French Somaliland)
Republican Union (french: Union républicaine) was a political party in French Somaliland. History The Republic Union was founded by Mahamoud Harbi Farah, a member of the French National Assembly. The party contested the 1957 territorial assembly election, winning 61% of the vote and all 30 seats in the assembly. After the election Harbi became vice-president of the governing council of the territory. At the time, the party was allied to the African Democratic Rally. The party advocated the unification of all Somali-speaking areas into one state. Harbi and the Republican Union supported full independence in the 1958 referendum. After the referendum had been held (resulting in a defeat for the pro-independentists), pro-French leader Hassan Gouled called for fresh elections to the territorial assembly. French Somaliland
French Somaliland (french: Côte française des Somalis, lit= French Coast of the Somalis so, Xeebta Soomaaliyeed ee Faransiiska) was a French colony in the Horn of Africa. It existed between 1884 and 1967, at which time it became the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. The Republic of Djibouti is its legal successor state.
