Greater Binghamton Sports Complex
The Greater Binghamton Sports Complex was an air-supported dome in Union, New York. With over in enclosed area, it was the largest air-supported dome in the United States. The complex was located on Airport Road off Route 17 near the city of Binghamton, New York. The purpose of the structure was to house its full size soccer field. The complex contained two offices and a cafe with seating area. The skylight measuring 197’ 6” x 30’ allowed natural light to enter the complex. The facility could house multiple sporting events at once and offered sports such as soccer, rugby union, lacrosse, baseball, and softball. Air-supported Structure
An air-supported (or air-inflated) structure is any building that derives its structural integrity from the use of internal pressurized air to inflate a pliable material (i.e. structural fabric) envelope, so that air is the main support of the structure, and where access is via airlocks. The first air-supported structure built in history was the radome manufactured at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory in 1948 by Walter Bird. The concept was implemented on a large scale by David H. Geiger with the United States pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan in 1970. It is usually dome-shaped, since this shape creates the greatest volume for the least amount of material. To maintain structural integrity, the structure must be pressurized such that the internal pressure equals or exceeds any external pressure being applied to the structure (i.e. wind pressure). Union, New York
Union is a town in Broome County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 56,346. The name derives from the town having served as a rendezvous for the Sullivan Expedition. The town is in the south-central part of the county, west of Binghamton. The communities of Union form the western suburbs of Binghamton. Two communities, the villages of Johnson City and Endicott, along with Binghamton, make up the "Triple Cities."
