Great Western And Brentford Railway
The Brentford branch line, also known as the Brentford Dock Line, is a freight-only branch railway line in west London, England. The route, which opened in 1859, was backed by the Great Western Railway and built by the Great Western & Brentford Railway Company. It ran from Southall to Brentford Dock. In 1964, the line to the wharves was closed. The branch now runs from the Great Western Main Line to a goods yard and waste transfer station in Brentford. History Early years The line was proposed by the Great Western Railway (GWR) during the 1840s, as a means of reaching the inner London docks via the River Thames. Brentford was chosen as the most suitable location for the terminus of the line, being the point where the Great Western Main Line is nearest to the Thames, and also the point where the Grand Junction Canal meets the river. Golden Mile (Brentford)
The Golden Mile is the name given to a stretch of the Great West Road north of Brentford running west from the western boundary of Chiswick in London, United Kingdom. It was so called due to the concentration of industry along this short stretch of road. This section of the Great West Road was opened in 1925 in order to bypass the notoriously congested Brentford High Street and several factories of architectural merit were rapidly built along the road to take advantage of both the good communications it provided, and the easy availability of land for new buildings. Many examples of the Art Deco architecture remain. However, no commercial buildings could be built further west along the Great West Road (A4) after Syon Lane (Gillette Corner) as the land was owned by the Church Commissioners. Trumpers Crossing Halte was a station of scant construction on the Brentford Branch Line of the Great Western Railway, which ran from to Brentford Dock. History It was opened on 2 May 1904 by the Great Western Railway as "Trumpers Crossing Halte", and was the only intermediate station between Southall and Brentford GWR stations. At this time, the GWR favoured the French spelling of "Halte" for such stations, because the English word "Halt" had an inappropriate meaning. The halt closed on 22 March 1915 as a wartime economy measure, re-opened on 12 April 1920 and closed permanently on 1 February 1926.
