Great West League
The Great West League (GWL) was a collegiate summer baseball league founded in 2014, comprising teams from California and Oregon. The league was designed to develop college talent, and only current college eligible players are allowed to participate. League teams were operated just like professional minor league teams. The GWL season ran from early June to mid-August. The league ceased operations on October 4, 2018. History The Great West League was founded in 2014, announcing that teams would be located in California and Oregon, with play beginning with the 2016 season. Former West Coast League president Ken Wilson was named the first president of the league. The Lodi Crushers and Chico Heat became the first two member teams. Baseball
Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The game occurs over the course of several plays, with each play generally beginning when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball that a player on the batting team, called the batter, tries to hit with a bat. San Francisco Seals (Great West League)
The San Francisco Seals are a summer collegiate wood-bat club based in Alameda, California and represent the San Francisco Bay Area. Established in 1985, they joined the Great West League in 2017 having replaced the Yuba City Bears who went dormant the same day the Seals were announced as new members. The Seals play their home games at College of Alameda Stadium. Team history The current Seals team was named after the former minor league baseball team that played in the Pacific Coast League from 1903 to 1957 at practically ALL levels of play. This team was founded by Abel Alcantar, who was a high school baseball coach at the time. He was approached by a local scout who suggested that he form a summer team for the San Francisco Public School System. So Alcantar founded the San Francisco Seals 18 & Under team. Harry & David Field
Harry & David Field is a baseball park in the northwest United States, located in Medford, Oregon. Adjacent to U.S. Cellular Community Park (now known as Lithia & Driveway Fields), it hosts youth and high school baseball, primarily the American Legion Medford Mustangs and the Medford Rogues, an independent collegiate wood bat team. Named for the Harry & David Corporation, which has its world headquarters located just south of the ballpark, it was the brainchild of local businessman Gary Miller. Opened in 2005, the ballpark replaced the demolished Miles Field, which was about a mile (1.6 km) up Highway 99, now a Walmart. Construction of the ballpark was never completed, and it is off-limits to professional teams under an agreement reached between the stadium and the city, which allows only amateur baseball and other community events. Medford, Oregon
Medford is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Oregon, in the United States. As of the 2020 United States Census on April 1, 2020, the city had a total population of 85,824 and a metropolitan area population of 223,259, making the Medford MSA the fourth largest metro area in Oregon. Medford Rogues (Great West League)
The Medford Rogues are a collegiate wood bat baseball team based in Medford, Oregon. They are currently playing as an independent team. They begin play as an expansion team in the West Coast League in 2013, where they played from 2013 to 2015, and were founding members of the Great West League, where they played from 2016 to 2018, then were members of the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League from 2019 to 2021. They play their home games at Harry & David Field and were named after the former Class-D Far West League affiliate of the New York Giants that played from 1950 to 1951. The California Collegiate League (CCL), founded in 1993, is a collegiate summer baseball league headquartered in Moorpark, California, United States. It is associated with both the National Baseball Congress and National Alliance of College Summer Baseball. The CCL hosts a 40-game summer season including a north-vs.-south All-Star Game, televised nationally by Bally's Sports West. Players use wooden bats and professional-level baseballs to further their development as potential professional ballplayers. Kiger Stadium
Kiger Stadium, formerly known as Gem Stadium, is a baseball stadium in the Altamont area of Klamath Falls, Oregon, United States. Construction began in late 1947 at the Crest Street site of Kiger Stadium, with a goal of opening in Spring 1948 for the Class D Klamath Falls Gems, the Far West League farm team of the Philadelphia Phillies. The stadium was built by Klamath Baseball, Inc. and paid for by the sale of stock to local citizens. The opening, and the original Gems, were a huge success, as the team led the league in attendance in three of the four years they were in the League, and won the Far West League's final Championship before the league folded after the 1951 season. Klamath Falls ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The city was originally called ''Linkville'' when George Nurse founded the town in 1867. The Klamath Falls Gems were a collegiate wood bat baseball team based in Klamath Falls, Oregon. They began as an expansion team in the West Coast League in 2011 and played their home games at Kiger Stadium, which is also the home of the Oregon Tech Owls. They were named after the former Class-D Far West League affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies that played from 1948 to 1951. They previously played in the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League from 2016 to 2017 and were members of the Great West League, having joined that league in October 2017 and played during the 2018 season. They were without a league as the GWL suspended operations on October 4, 2018, and have eventually ceased operations themselves without notice.
