The Great Neck Park District is a park district serving much of the Great Neck Peninsula of Nassau County, Long Island, New York, United States. It is the oldest park district in the State of New York and is headquartered a 5 Beach Road, Great Neck, New York 11024. History The Great Neck Park District was established on August 14, 1916, by Great Neck Resident Roswell Eldridge. It was created only a few months after a law was passed by lawmakers in Albany allowing towns to establish park districts; the Great Neck Park District was the first such district of its type to be established anywhere in the State of New York. In 1942, the Great Neck Park District gave some of its public beach in Kings Point to the United States government for the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Great Neck (village), New York
Great Neck is a village in the town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 9,989 at the 2010 census. The term Great Neck is also commonly applied to the entire peninsula on the north shore and an area extending south to and including Lake Success. The larger Great Neck area comprises a residential community of some 40,000 people made up of nine villages as well as hamlets of North Hempstead, and to distinguish the Village of Great Neck from the other villages in the Greater Great Neck area, it is sometimes referred to as "the old village". North Hempstead is one of three towns in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 237,639 at the 2020 census. History The area was first settled by Europeans around 1643 and became part of the town of Hempstead. During the American Revolution the southern part of Hempstead was primarily Tory, while the northern part, having been settled by Yankees, supported the revolution. The Manhasset Park District is a park district serving much of the Greater Manhasset area of Nassau County, Long Island, New York, United States. It is headquartered a 62 Manhasset Avenue, Manhasset, NY 11030. History The Manhasset Park District was established in 1921. In the late 1940s, there was a controversial, failed proposal to build a 3-acre park in the northern part of the Strathmore area of Manhasset. It was argued that all of Greater Manhasset would be paying for a park which only North Strathmore residents would be able to use. When the vote on the $45,000 (1949 USD) bond referendum was held, the referendum was rejected, and subsequently the Manhasset Park District would never build the park.
